    Giving away/selling immodest clothes

    Report bad ads?

Salaam everyone! I am planning to revert in this Ramadan, In Sha Allah!

I am clearing my wardrobe. And almost all the clothes are immodest. But, most them have been worn once. I am planning to sell them in Depop. Is it ok? Is it a sin to sell those immodest clothes?

    Re: Giving away/selling immodest clothes

    Wa'alaikum as'salaam,

It's best to either throw them away or donate to a factory that will make them in rags for cleaning, because....

Allaah has commanded the believers to cooperate amongst themselves in righteousness and piety, and He has forbidden them to cooperate in sin and transgression. He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression” [al-Maa’idah 5:2]

According to the shar’i principle set out by the scholars: “The means are subject to the same ruling as the ends.” So everything that leads to haraam is also haraam.

Selling haraam clothing such as short skirts and tight pants etc in which women go out is undoubtedly haraam because it leads to forbidden wanton display of their charms, by means of which women tempt men.

Those who buy these clothes usually go out and appear in them in front of people, so selling them is helping in sin and transgression, and spreading immorality and evil among the people.

I know they cost money but do the islamic thing and inshallah Allah will compensate you for it.

Also, regarding your shahadah in ramadan... If you are ready to convert then it's best you say your shahadah right now. You can say it by yourself, you do not need an audience or the masjid/imam for it. if you want to state your shahada with friends or at the masjid in ramadan then you can do the "official" one at that time but you should do this right away because there is no guarantee we will live to see the next day let alone the next month. So one should not delay in entering Islam.

    Asalaamualaykum:

There would be a difference of opinion on this issue.

    Some scholars would say
    a) Throw it away as its immodest.
    b) Donate it to an exclusive non muslim charity whereby the chances of someone taking them would be non muslim (This understanding is based on the fact that there is now wastage and by default since a Kaafir did not accept the deen, modesty is a non issue from their perspective)

As far as selling them is concerned, that would also be debatable.

    * To be on the safe side, should you want, perhaps sell them and then donate the money to a neutral charity like Cancer Research.

Please remember that even if you throw it away, in this physical world you might have lost wealth but InshAllah in the Aakhira, this will weigh favourably on your good deeds.

    Wasalaam.

Forgot to mention one other alternative.

you could still keep them and wear them at home in your own privacy.

Which scholars hold the (b) opinion? I think the stronger opinion is the one shared above on islamqa. Allah commands us to help each other in righteousness and not evil. By giving immodest clothes to others not only are you helping them in doing sin (immodesty) but also others (including muslims) commit sin of looking at such immodesty when they go outside.

Even though it's been two years since this thread was posted, I want to commend your decision to clear your wardrobe and your intention to revert during Ramadan, In Sha Allah! While the original query might be older, the importance of your actions remains relevant.

    Re: Giving away/selling immodest clothes

Wa Alaikum Assalam! Congratulations on your decision. In Islam, it is generally encouraged to maintain modesty in dress. If you have clothes that you consider immodest, selling them or giving them away to someone who may use them differently is a positive step. It's not considered a sin to sell them, especially if your intention is to clear your wardrobe and transition to more modest attire. Just ensure your intention is sincere and considerate. May your journey be blessed!
