An imam is a muslim that is educated within the Islamic system and is able to do many things, such as leading prayers, helping out others, preparing and announcing khutbahs/sermons, things like that, an imam can go as far as being ur ordinary masjid sheikh to a qualified scholar.....
imam is a person that leads the people in prayer and jumma funeral prayer and gives people advice and tells people about islam and spreads islam everywhere.
