    Choosing a Madhab

    As-salamu 'alaykumu

So I've hit my next piece of confusion in my new revert journey. Like with every question I ask, this feels so silly.
I understand that one should not mix madhabs. How do you go about selecting one? If I choose one, but attend a masjid that is different, am I going to cause some kind trouble?
I happen to like the way Imam Shafi arrived at his conclusions. The masjid nearest my home is Maliki. The masjid where I attend Jumma seems to be largely neutral (this makes sense, since it is at a University.)

Jazakum Allah Khairan for your responses.

    Re: Choosing a Madhab

there are some minor differences between madhabs . Should not be a big issue in offering Jumuah salat at mosque following any madhab .

    And Allah Knows Best.

    Re: Choosing a Madhab

    Walaikumussalam!!
Brother there are four madhab's " hanafi, shafi, malaki and humbali".We are the followers of the Imams never tried to compare the madhabs. And it will not help you anyway.
How do you go about selecting one?

You can select one and you also cannot face any trouble around you.By following one Imam we don't reject the proofs of other Imams. All madhab are belong to only one religion "Islam".
    JazakAllah

    Re: Choosing a Madhab

    Salam alaykum

I said shahada 18 years ago but never select any madhab. Did I make some mistake? If yes, how I could select one and say others are not ok to me? How I know what is one I should select?

don't listen to most folks regarding mudhabs. we don't follow the Imams, we follow Rasoolullah, pbuh, as did the Imams. if you attend the closest Masjid, go with Imam Malik. if you do not, go with whoever your teacher is. if you don't have one, go with the majority. you go with a mudhab to get rulings on fiqh, that application of the shariah. as you have no idea, you go with a scholar; in this case one of the Imams. that is why you should accept the closest one. you'll notice some geographic distictions. Maliki in Western Africa, Shafii'i in Eastern and Southern Africa and Hanifi in NE Africa and Asia.

however, you should eventually study Islamic Law. the Imams did, but they weren't perfect, nor did they have access to EVERY hadith. wherever a ruling of theirs is contradicted by an authentic hadith, you go with the hadith. this is what the Imams did.

you don't "mix madhabs" by picking what you prefer from each. you go with a madhab, eventually, you will encounter incorrect opinions, go with the correct opinion. we don't (well, shouldn't) blindly follow the Imams, we blindly follow Rasoolullah, pbuh.
