The Quran is a book like no other, the perfect gift to mankind, embedded with knowledge known and unknown. It was revealed over 1400 years ago and contains 114 surahs and 6,236 verses. The Quran is written with perfection, devoid of mistakes or misconceptions, divine, inspiring and educating. The Quran is termed the world’s most read and memorized holy book, and as such below are surahs every Muslim should know by heart.

    Surah Al-Fatiha
It’s the opening and the greatest surah of the holy Quran. It has just 7 verses, and it is also the most recited surah of the Quran. It is so important that it has numerous names, each name depicting its importance. It’s called the Al-fatiha (the opening), Umm-al Quran (mother of the Quran), umm-al kitab (mother of the book), sab’ul mathani (the seven often repeated verses), Al-Hamd (praise to Allah), As-Salah (the prayer), Ash-shifa (the cure), Asas Al-Quran (the foundation of the Quran).

    Surat Al-Kahf
The 18th surah of the holy Quran containing 110 verses is also one of the most powerful surahs of the holy Quran. The Prophet (pbuh) was narrated as saying: “Whoever would reads Surat Al-Kahf on Friday it would provide him of light for the duration between the two Fridays.” (Sahih Muslim). Similarly, it was stated by Tafsir ibn Kathir “whoever reads and memorize the first ten verses of Surat al- kahf will be saved from fitnah of Al-Dajjal. Its commonly recited on Fridays as a sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) .

    Surat Al-Mulk
A very important surah in the Quran which is believed to intercede for the believer who recites it often. The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasalam) said, “There is a surah in the Qur’an which is only thirty verses. It defended whoever recited it until it puts him into paradise”. It is the 67th surah having just 30 verses, Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (radiallahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasalam) said, ‘It is my desire/love that Surat Mulk should be in the heart of every Muslim’.it is also the protector of man from the torment of the grave.”

    Surah Al-Kafirun
Surat al-kafirun is the 109th surah of the Quran with just 6 verses. It is believed that the Prophet (pbuh) used to recite this surah before going to bed as it will protect or save one from shirk (the sin of practicing idolatry or polytheism).

    The Three Quls
The three Quls are the last 3 surah’s of the holy Quran 112, 113 and 114 Ikhlas, Falaq, and Nas respectively. Narrated ‘Aisha (R.A.): Whenever the Prophet went to bed, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. (Sahih Al-Bukhari). Doing this protects the believers from any form of harm aimed at him while he is sleeping.

    Ayat Al-Kursi
This is a portion from the longest surah of the Quran, Al-baqara, verse 255. This is because of its significance, it is reported by Abu Hurairah (RA) that someone used to come upon him and take from the charity which the Prophet (SAW) had made him guardian over, night after night. So on the third night, he said: “I will report you to the Messenger of Allah (SAW)”, the man said: ‘Let me teach you some phrases which Allah will cause you benefit’. He was very eager for good so he said: ‘read ‘Ayat ‘al-Kursi completely, for there is still upon you from Allah a guardian, and no shaytan can get close to you until you enter upon morning.’ Then he (SAW) said: “He told you the truth and he is a liar, (that was a shaytan).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

Alhamdulillah, the importance and teachings of the Quran and its surahs and verses must never be undermined in our every day life. May Allah grant us the zeal to benefit and make good use of the knowledge and teachings of the Quran, Amin.
