the gulenists where i live have a community center where they organize turkish and islamic cultural events, and, despite gulenism being a somewhat liberal interpretation of Islam, there is gender segregation, and boys and girls in High School generally dont talk to one another......however, i heard from some more liberal members of the community that during college it is fine to chat with girls in class or at the community center as long as you keep it professional, and don't veer off into the haram, such as dating....a local imam at a regular mosque shares this view....however, i spoke to the top imam at the florida gulenist community center (I dont live in florida), and he said talking to the opposite sex without the purpose of getting to know someone for marriage is haram, as it leads to zina, and another local imam at a regular mosque I know shares this view, saying it "always leads to zina" if there is a public event at such a community center, or you are in college, what is the problem with chatting with members of the opposite sex? i can understand high school, but why in college? is this a rule?
