The U.S tricks the youth into joining the army

After falling well short of its recruiting target for 2005, the U.S. Army set new recruitment guidelines to expand its pool of potential recruits, raising the maximum recruiting age for new soldiers by five years to 39, and doubling the salaries to $40,000.

An editorial on Sweden’s Göteborgs Posten states that the turmoil in IRAQ is the reason behind the recent military changes. The article tries to explain how the U.S.’s recruiting problem can affect other countries participating in the “WAR ON TERROR”, and whether foreign forces are being asked to perform duties that the public never agreed to.

The recruitment changes came after war critics said the U.S. army was “broken” by ongoing overseas deployment and recruiting shortfalls. The army is "worn out", living "hand-to-mouth" and "barely getting by", We’re overextended worldwide, ... We have too small an Army for the job that we’re doing,” Rep. John Murtha recently said.

Last year’s recruitment target for the U.S. army was 80,000 soldiers, but at year's end only 73,000 had joined. The new age category, which is tempted by money, indicates the military’s desperation to reverse recruiting shortfalls. The continued violence in IRAQ is making it difficult to persuade young Americans to join the army. Also the instability in AFGHANISTAN made youth more cautious. The risk of being killed or wounded is too high, and the public opposition to military presence in both countries is growing. Commissions and hearings in the Congress also show that there might be legal actions against those who led the U.S. into IRAQ WAR on the basis of erroneous information.

Moreover, recent polls show that over 80% of IRAQIS want occupation forces out of their country, and about 45% of the Iraqi population believe attacks against foreign forces are justified. Also several countries that were previously in IRAQ withdrew their forces after suffering high casualties. "Absolutely, we're the target. We're the enemy… They (Iraqis) are united against U.S. forces and we have become a catalyst for violence. The war in IRAQ is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion, “ says Murtha.

In AFGHANISTAN, a low-key U.S. withdrawal is taking place. These troops are being replaced by soldiers from other countries. Here is where Sweden, as well as other U.S. allies, come into picture.

Two Swedish troops were recently killed, and one wounded, by a roadside bomb attack in northern AFGHANISTAN. It is unclear what the Swedes’ mission was. The Swedish High Command refused to disclose the soldiers’ names citing the sensitive nature of their mission. The news came as the Swedish Parliament, the Riksdagen, raised the level of the Swedish force in AFGHANISTAN to replace the U.S. soldiers after they leave the country. The Swedish troops will be under the command of the U.S.-dominated NATO, despite the fact that Sweden is not a member of the Western military alliance. Although Defense Minister Leni Björklund admitted that casualties cannot be ruled out in AFGHANISTAN, she refused to say what they are going to be doing there.

The latest developments doesn’t amount to much if taken separately. But when put together, they form a different picture. The United States neither wants nor is it able to make a long-term military commitment in AFGHANISTAN, and it desperately needs replacements. Sweden is complying, and thus expanding its contingent. But who set the parameters?

It is well-known that Washington launched the "WAR ON TERROR" and set the guidelines on how to fight it. But does the expanded Swedish military presence in AFGHANISTAN mean that Sweden is now participating in this war?

The United States has an all-volunteer professional military, but Sweden still has universal male conscription. Voluntarism is predicated on the openness of those doing the recruiting, while conscription compels youth into joining the army. This requires a higher degree of honesty and specificity from the government.

The U.S. is trying to trick the youth into joining the army. When the BUSH administration secretly prepared to invade IRAQ, young Americans had no idea that they were part of the plan. The debate about betrayal has just started in the U.S., and relatives are directly accusing BUSH of sacrificing their sons and daughters in an illegal WAR.

Despite severe recruiting problems, Washington doesn’t want other countries to take control in IRAQ or AFGHANISTAN. The United States plans to stay in charge, but it wants to delegate certain secondary tasks. And this is where the U.S. allies come into the picture, sending troops on missions that cannot stand public scrutiny.

My cousin came back from Iraq he said what you see on the news isnt the truth they kill innocent muslims left and right thinking them to be terrorists when in fact they arent really doing anything at all. he witnessed so much that he needed psychiatric help, so i advise all of you to know that whats going in Iraq isnt just.
