    How much is beauty worth?

    Report bad ads?

    Salaam Alaykum,

Islamically how much is too much when it comes to cosmetic products and procedures? I am not talking about those that are too invasive and can cause health problems like implants, but rather less invasive ones like microdermabrasions, chemical peels, extremely expensive creams. If you can afford these and want it done to erase skin imperfections is that ok? Or is it considered Israaf( wasteful expenditure) since you are spending too much on them?:><::><:

Sheikh Muhammad Nur Abdullah, former president of the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) and member of the Fiqh Council of North America, states:

Wearing makeup in general is part of zeenah or beautification, which is forbidden to be shown to non-mahrams. Therefore, a woman cannot wear makeup outside her home. But in general, a Muslim woman should be modest when she goes in public.

As for wearing makeup in her house or to beautify herself for her husband, a woman should be moderate and should not take extremes in anything. If she maintains this level of moderation, there will not be any harm in sha' Allah.

In regards to makeup in general:

Wearing kohl is one of the sunnas of the Prophet, peace be upon him. It is allowed for both males and females. Unless you will bring undue attention to yourself, it is permissible for you to wear kohl.

Makeup is different. In Surat al-Nur, Allah says, "And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss". (Qur'an 24:31).

Scholars have interpreted the directive to not display beauty and ornaments except what ordinarily appears in terms of ordinary adornment and extra adornment. Ordinary adornments like kohl, henna, or a ring are permissible to wear in public. Extra adornment, like perfume, lipstick, dazzling eye colors, and the like are not permissible to wear in public. In short, any type of adornment which makes a woman look "made-up" and attracts amorous attention is not permissible, as this would defeat the whole purpose of hijab.

    And Allah knows best.

    Umm Salah

Therefore sister do not go to extremes or be extravagant in make up and cosmetics. Only wear makeup for your husband and infront of mahrams and not when your going out in order that you don't bring undue attention to yourself as will go against the very purpose of hijaab.

Re: How much is beauty worth?

In addition, I think there is also an issue of intention. if hte intention is to beautify the creation of Allah then its forbidden. But if the intention is to remove the drawbacks, then it is permitted. So if someone has pimples on their skin and this creates ugliness then it is permitted to use the creams. On the other hand if the skin is natural but the woman wants to beautify it further, it is taken to mean that she is unthankful of what Allah (swt) has bestowed her with.

What is the ruling on exfoliating a woman’s face and doing face-lifts by using modern methods and lasers or using needles?.

    Praise be to Allaah.
Exfoliation means removing a layer of skin to expose new skin. The reason for doing that may be to remove a blemish on the skin that resulted from a burn or tear, or it may be for cosmetic purposes, to beautify the face. If it is the former, then it is permissible, because removing blemishes makes this action permissible. But if it is for the latter then it is not permissible, because that is changing the creation of Allaah, and is a kind of beautification that is not permissible in sharee’ah.

    Salaam Brother,
Thanks so much but I wasn't referring to make-up at all. I mean cosmetic procedures for the body like microdemabrasion and chemical peels to reveal more radiant and healthy skin.

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

As mentioned in detailed in an earlier answer that the general ruling with regards to cosmetic surgery is that of impermissibility, for it involves mutilation of one's body (muthla) and changing the nature created by Allah (taghyeer khalq Allah). However, in genuine cases of extreme abnormality, there is a dispensation of permissibility, for necessity makes prohibition lawful. (Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa al-Naza'ir) For more details, you may refer to the earlier answer available on this website and sunnipath.com.

Based on this, it will not be permitted for a doctor or surgeon to perform surgery for purely cosmetic reasons and merely for the purpose of beautification. It will be unlawful for a Muslim surgeon to carry out surgery in order to merely make someone look better or to improve their appearance. However, if there is a genuine case of need, it will be permitted.

    Allah Most High says:

"Help you one another in righteousness and piety, but help you not one another in sin and rancour." (Surah al-Ma'idah, V: 2)

Assisting another in sin and being a cause for someone else's sin is also sinful, especially when one's action becomes a direct cause for that sin being carried out. Thus, this job would not be Halal, with the income made on it being unlawful. However, if a surgeon's work comprises of many jobs (and also includes performing cosmetic surgery), then his complete earnings will not be considered Haram.

In such cases, it will be permitted for the Muslim doctor to refer the patient to someone else saying that he/she cannot carry out the surgery; hence, you may visit some other specialist. Doctors have to be extra careful and vigilant in matters like these, because they can find themselves in many situations where it is easy for one to fall into sin. May Allah Most High guide us to that which pleases him and His beloved Messenger (Allah bless him & give him peace).

    And Allah knows best
