What are the causes of Canker Sores? and how do you get rid of them? or lessen the pain?
My brother has Canker sores, and he's using mouthwash that kills bacteria but it doesn't seem to be helping...
What other methods someone can use to lessen the pain or cure the sores? Also are these sores common does everyone get them?

Canker sores are caused by a virus. It is the very same virus that causes Chicken pox, Shingles, herpes etc. They are very contagious often caused by sharing a soft drink or rubbing one's mouth after touching something contaminated by the virus.. Since it is a virus and not a bacteria that causes them most anti-bacterial mouth washes are not effective against them. Cleanliness, frequently washing of hands avoiding drinking or eating after somebody who may have them is the best prevention.
Once a person has them, they will have them for life, however eruptions from them can be stopped or greatly reduced. Most over the counter treatments work. Many simple home remedies also work, one of the best being to dab honey on them. If they occur often or if they are extremely painful see a doctor.
One favor a person, who is having an outbreak, can do for others is to take care in not spreading them. Resist the temptation to kiss that cute baby, do not share that bottle of soda with friends, keep the hands clean etc.
