Dozens killed at Afghan wedding

At least 40 people have been killed by a suicide bomber at a wedding party in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province.
More than 70 people were injured when the blast occurred on Wednesday night as men sat down to eat at the celebration.
"A suicide bomber went inside the party where hundreds of people were sitting and blew himself up," a police official said of the blast in Arghandab district.
The explosion hit the wedding party about 9pm (1630 GMT) killing 40 people, including children, and wounding 74 more, Zemeri Bashary, the interior ministry spokesman, said.
Nato has said that the Taliban committed the strike, while the Taliban have said that Nato are behind the attack.
James Bays, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the capital Kabul, said: "Certainly we know what happened which is a very large explosion ... But we have no idea who was behind it.
"The Taliban say they are not responsible, saying they deplore it and condemn it in the strongest terms."
'Against humanity'
Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, condemned the attack, saying that was "against the whole of humanity".
Our correspondent said that Arghandab was once a fertile, agriculturally rich area, but it has changed to region of conflict in recent years, particularly in the last three years.
"It is an area that Nato concentrates on as they continue their operations in the Kandahar area," he said.
Toror Yalai Wesa, the governor of Kandahar, told Al Jazeera that a survivor had said a car bomb was the cause of the explosion.
"We don't have any women casualties. Most of them are adult men and some are young children," he said.
The man getting married was a policeman from one of the checkpoints in the area, Wesa said.
Mohammad Zanif, the groom's brother, told the AFP news agency that the groom had been wounded.
"There was an enormous explosion and as a result everyone there was either killed or injured," he said.
Relatives of the wounded gathered at an area hospital and local television appealed for people to donate blood to help treat the injured.

The survivals have mentioned that just before the bombing took place they heard spy planes hovering over the area, and soon after they heard a loud explosion, and then there was panic, there were dead and injured bodies every were. This cowardly act of the invaders will not deter the freedom loving Afghan's from their struggled to liberate their country from the invading forces.

A US air strike killed 47 civilians, including 39 women and children, as they were travelling to a wedding in Afghanistan, an official inquiry found today. The bride was among the dead.
Another nine people were wounded in Sunday's attack, the head of the Afghan government investigation, Burhanullah Shinwari, said.
Fighter aircraft attacked a group of militants near the village of Kacu in the eastern Nuristan province, but one missile went off course and hit the wedding party, said the provincial police chief spokesman, Ghafor Khan.
The US military initially denied any civilians had been killed.
Lieutenant Rumi Nielson-Green, a spokeswoman for the US-led coalition, told AFP today the military regretted the loss of any civilian life and was investigating the incident.
The US is facing similar charges over strikes two days earlier in another border area of Afghanistan.
The nine-member inquiry team appointed by the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, to look into the wedding party incident found only civilians had been killed in the attack.
"We found that 47 civilians, mostly women and children, were killed in the air strikes and another nine were wounded," said Shinwari, who is also the deputy speaker of Afghanistan's senate.
"They were all civilians and had no links with the Taliban or al-Qaida."
Around 10 people were missing and believed to be still under rubble, he said. The inquiry team were shown the bloodied clothes of women and children in a visit to the scene.
The Red Cross said 250 people had been killed or wounded in five days of military action and militant attacks in the past week.
The toll included the US-led air strikes and a suicide blast outside the Indian embassy in Kabul on Monday that killed more than 40 people, including two Indian envoys.
The UN said last month that nearly 700 Afghan civilians had lost their lives this year - about two-thirds in militant attacks and about 255 in military operations.
Karzai has pleaded repeatedly for western troops to take care not to harm civilians, and in December wept during a speech lamenting civilian deaths at the hands of foreign forces.

Kandahar provincial Gov. Tooryalai Wesa said doctors at the city hospital had recovered ball bearings from the bodies of the dead. Militants often pack ball bearings and other metal into suicide vests to kill more victims.
"The Taliban are doing two things at once," Wesa told reporters. "On one side they target people who are in favor of the government. Then at the same time, they don't want people to know their real face."
Targeting people who are in favor of the government seems to be their standard operating procedure. Maybe more information will come out later to get to the bottom of this one.

Of course the Taliban would deny such an atrocity, just as with the attack on the wedding... if they admitted it even people like you might finally wake up.
Not everyone is as willing to go to such extreme lengths of denial to preserve the Tali-fan fantasy as you. Most Afghans (and Pakistanis) want as little to do with them as they do the US and NATO forces.

A legacy of the ten years of civil war during the 80s is that many military garrisons and facilities are located in urban areas where the Soviet-backed government had placed them since they could be better protected there from attacks by the rural mujahideen. Successor Afghan governments inherited these emplacements. To suggest that the Taliban used 'human shields' is more revealing of the historical amnesia and racism of those making such claims, than of Taliban deeds. Anti-aircraft emplacements will naturally be placed close by ministries, garrisons, communications facilities, etc.. A heavy bombing onslaught must necessarily result in substantial numbers of civilian casualties simply by virtue of proximity to 'military targets', a reality exacerbated by the admitted occasional poor targeting, human error, equipment malfunction, and the irresponsible use of out-dated Soviet maps. But, the critical element remains the very low value put upon Afghan civilian lives by U.S. military planners and the political elite, as clearly revealed by U.S. willingness to bomb heavily populated regions. Current Afghan civilian lives must and will be sacrificed in order to [possibly] protect future American lives. Actions speak, and words [can] obscure: the hollowness of pious pronouncements by Rumsfeld, Rice and the compliant corporate media about the great care taken to minimize collateral damage is clear for all to see. Other U.S. bombing targets hit are impossible to 'explain' in terms other than the U.S. seeking to inflict maximum pain upon Afghan society and perceived 'enemies': the targeted bombing of the Kajakai dam and other power stations, radio stations, the Kabul telephone exchange, the Al Jazeera Kabul office, trucks and buses filled with fleeing refugees, and the numerous attacks upon civilian trucks carrying fuel oil. Indeed, the bombing of Afghan civilian infrastructure parallels that of the Afghan civilian.
This dossier makes six major points. First, the U.S. bombing upon Afghanistan has been a low bombing intensity, high civilian casualty campaign [in both absolute terms and relative to other U.S. air campaigns]. Secondly, this has happened notwithstanding the far greater accuracy of the weapons because of U.S. military planners decisions to employ powerful weapons in populated regions and to bomb what are dubious military targets. Thirdly, the U.S. mainstream corporate media has been derelict in its non-reporting of civilian casualties when ample evidence existed from foreign places that the U.S. air war upon Afghanistan was creating such casualties in large numbers. Fourthly, the decision by U.S. military planners to execute such a bombing campaign reveals and reflects the differential values they place upon Afghan and American lives. Fifth, this report counters the dangerous notion that the United States can henceforth wage a war and only kill enemy combatants. Sixth, the U.S. bombing campaign has targeted numerous civilian facilities and the heavy use of cluster bombs, will have a lasting legacy born by one of the poorest, most desperate peoples of our world. In sum, though not intended to be, the U.S. bombing campaign which began on the evening of October 7th, has been a war upon the people, the homes, the farms and the villages of Afghanistan, as well as upon the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
