It is narrated that ‘Uthmân b. Áffân (Ra) said in a sermon:
Son of Adam! Know that the angel of death who has been assigned to you has not ceased to pass you and move on to others, ever since you have been in this world. But it is as if he is about to pass someone else and move on to target you, so be careful and prepare for him (by correcting your deeds).
And do not forget him, for he does not forget you.
And know o son of Adam, if you are heedless about yourself and do not prepare, no one else will prepare for you.
You must meet Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so take for yourself and do not leave it to someone else. Peace be on you.Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-Ílm 2: 73, 74.

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrî (Ra) often used to say, “O youth! Seek the hereafter, for we often see people pursuing the hereafter and finding it as well as the dunyâ (worldly wellbeing), but we have never seen anyone pursue the dunyâ and gain the hereafter as well as the dunyâ.” Al-Bayhaqî, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabîr, article 12.

It is reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basrî (Ra) that he said:
The life of this world is made up of three days: yesterday has gone with all that was done; tomorrow, you may never reach; but today is for you so do what you should do today. Al-Bayhaqî, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabîr p197.

Give preference to the eternal life of the Hereafter!
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "He who loves his worldly life will harm his Hereafter. And he who loves his Hereafter will harm his worldly life. Give preference then, to that which is eternal (The Hereafter) over that which is temporary". (Ahmed)
He also said: "Wise is he who controls his desires & prepares for the life which starts after death, and wretched is he who makes himself a slave to his desires and has false expectations of Allah". (Tirmidhi)
The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "O Allah! There is no life worth living except the life of the Hereafter... (Bukhari)

"If only you knew what you will certainly see upon your death, you would never again eat a single bite out of a craving appetite, and you would never again drink an extra sip of water for the pleasure of unquenchable and insatiable thirst.
Hence, you will remain outdoor in perpetuity, bewildered and awaiting the unexpected, and you will never again seek comfort in a shelter or seek a shade. You will wander aimlessly and climb the hilltops of every mountain, you will look up towards the heavens and beseech your Lord for mercy, and you will beat on your chest and cry endlessly, and you will wish that you were a little vegetable – a plant which is protected to grow, and then plucked to be eaten by a hungry person passing along.”

Saeed 'Ubaid bin 'Umayr al-Laythi: 'Not a single man dies without being called by the grave in which he is buried, which says: "I am the house of gloom, & of loneliness & solitude! If you were obedient to Allah during your lifetime then today I shall be a source of mercy for you, but if you were rebellious then I am an act of vengence against you. The obedient who enter me shall come forth joyful, while the rebellious who enter me shall emerge in ruin".'
It is narrated that the Holy Prophet (saw) has said: "One who gains the love and grace of Allah, always end (Ajal) will be before his eyes and he will be always worried about his death. But the one who take Satan (Shaitan) as a friend and becomes Bad-Bakht. Shaitan overpowers him and indulge (Giraftaar) him in long long desiresand them he never remember death."
"Were people to just pause & think for a moment, they would realise that the Hereafter is the future that every sane person should prepare for by doing good deeds; that is to make this worldly life like a paved path or passage towards it. He should turn ALL of his efforts in this life to become like seeds of which he expects none of its fruits in this life, but waits for its reward from Allah in the Hereafter".

Uthman (Ra) said: "Allah gave you this world so that you may seek the Hereafter with it, not for you to desire it."
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
"This world, in comparison with the world to come (The hereafter), is the same as if one of you were to put his finger in the ocean.?Consider how much (water) you would have (on your finger) when you pulled it out." (Muslim)

Oh Slaves of Allah! Let us compete and rush towards the forgiveness of Allah and Paradise which is as wide as the heavens and Earth for we must not slacken in doing so lest we are taken all of a sudden by death.
The Prophet (Sallallahu `alaihi wasallam) said: “Being laid-back is best in every matter except for good deeds" (Abu Daawood & Al-Haakim).
So let us not compete for who has bigger houses or more suceess and money in this world but let us compete for the highest ranks in the next world:
“… So for this let the competitors compete" (Al Mutaffifeen:26) and also, “.. So race to (all that is) good… (Al-Baqarah:148).
So let us begin NOW to compete NOT for this temporary existence but for eternity in the hereafter, for there will only be regret for those of us who wasted our precious few seconds in this life without doing much good:
Ibn Masood said: “I have never regretted anything as a day spent of my life without doing good deeds.”
May Allah enable us to spend each and every second from now until death doing everything to please him and refraining from anything which angers or displeases him. Ameen

Ibn Qayyim (Ra) said: "Losing time is harder than death, as losing time keeps you away from Allah and the Hereafter, while death keeps you away from the worldly life and people."
Ali (Ra) said: "Everyone who is taken by death asks for more time, while everyone who still has time makes excuses for procrastination (putting off important tasks)."
So let us make the best of the little time we have left & not put off preparing for the Hereafter.
