As Salam Alaikum as a person who has converted/reverted to Islam as a Muslim how do I give up Music ? Since most Music is Secular and does not glorify God is this a good reason not to listen to music ? Since Music can influence human behavior is this also a good reason not to listen to music ? Also can Music affect one`s emotions and cause a person to become sad or happy or mad I ask this because this has happened to me when I listened to sad or depressing Music or Angry Music or Happy Music/Feel Good Music anyone agree with me that this a good reason to not listen to Music I will listen to Azan/The Islamic Call to Prayer and Quran Recitation ?

Muslims are aware that nothing has been prohibited by Allah except that which is harmful to the welfare of a Muslim individual and the society as a whole. The divine attribute behind the prohibition of music can be comprehended by looking into the diverse influence music can have.

Experiments carried out by doctors and professors have confirmed that the music of today is such that it does not only affect the brain, but each and every organ of one`s body. There is a close relationship between music and bodily movements. We find that people listening to music automatically start tapping their fingers and feet, as if the music is permeating in their blood.

It is also proved that music affect`s one`s emotions, increases arousal in terms of alertness and excitement and also leads to various physiological changes in the person. In a psychology experiment, it was found that listening to moderate type of music increased one`s normal heart beat, whilst listening to rock music the heart beat increased even further, yet people claim that music has no effect.

It is a very ignorant and misguided attitude to percieve music as a form of pleasure and passing of time, since the messages of today`s music follow a general theme of love, fornication, drugs and freedom.

    Is Music Haram?
    Al-Haadi Vol. 10 Issue No. 4

    http://www.beautifulislam.net/halalharam/music.htm

Some say that music and musical instruments have the effect of softening people’s hearts and creating gentle feelings. This is not true, because it provokes physical desires and whims. If it really did what they say, it would have softened the hearts of the musicians and made their attitude and behaviour better, but most of them, as we know, are astray and behave badly.

    Asalaam alaykum.
I know its hard. But everytime I want to listen to music or I am; I just think to myself that its the shaytan trying to make me sin and I stop and listen to naats, nasheeds etc. Its a good idea to listen to Quran recitiation it will make you feel so much better - music does the opposite makes you sad etc.

No, sorry... Can't say I agree with any of those reasons.

I think it's very ignorant to assume that all music deals with those topics. Btw, you do realize that love is a topic in all works of fiction, right? Even arabic poetry deals with it.

I hate this argument. Yes, of course music has an affect on you. Yes, it makes you feel emotions. Guess what? So does anything else you might do for enjoyment. Ever read a good book?

Music makes you sad? All of it? You're sure about that? What about books that make you sad? Do you avoid those as well?

Come on guys... You're free to avoid music and to consider it forbidden, but lets stop with the terrible arguments against it. They're just not true.

Re: As Salam Alaikum how do I give up listening to Music having the desire and urge t

take a look at these threads Inshallah it would save you some time from waiting for replies from other members. Also I recommend you to read this book it'll give you a general view on what music is like in Islam http://kalamullah.com/Books/Music%20and%20Singing.pdf Better yet you should go meet a local scholar or the Imam of the Masjid about Music and they could give you an even better explanation. If you find it really hard, just start with listening to nasheeds at first, then listen to nasheed w/o music just Vocals like Like The Wind by Abu Ali on youtube
