    The Sinai Argument (2001)

    Shlomi Tal

The question of whether the revelation of God to the ancestry of the nation
of Israel took place is of great importance to the Jewish faith, comparable to
the Empty Tomb debate in Christianity. As do fundamentalist Christians with the
latter, Orthodox Jews base the faith on the alleged historical fact of the
revelation at Mount Sinai, saying it affirms the religion and negates all
objections to it. Let us critically examine the issue and evaluate the case for
the historicity of the Sinai Covenant.

    Argument from Unique Public Revelation

The argument for the historicity of a public revelation is put forward
in Rabbi Yehuda Halevi's Kuzari, and given a recent elaboration by Rabbi
Dr. Dovid Gottlieb of Ohr Somayach, an
Orthodox outreach yeshiva network, in his Living Up to Truth
    apologetics series [1].

The outline of the argument is as follows:

    1. The story of the revelation to the entire ancestry of the nation of Israel
is without parallel in all history.
    2. The reason it is without parallel is that such a story cannot be fabricated.
    3. Only private revelations and miracles can be fabricated; a public revelation
      must actually have happened.

The main issue is whether a public event, all the more so before an entire
nation, could be told without having happened. The author says the argument can
be falsified by bringing just one claim of a public event which is said to have
happened but known to be untrue. He argues that there is no other such claim
because it is impossible to make such a claim unless the event really happened.
He then goes on to refute the allegation that the Sinai Argument is a result of
myth formation, saying that if the myth of the Sinai Covenant was formed by
extrapolation of an impressive event then there ought to be parallel myths. The
fact of revelation at Sinai must therefore be real, passed from generation to
generation without fail, for it is impossible for a father to pass a lie onto
    his son.

The beginnings of all ancient and modern religions have a common thread: one or two people have a revelation and persuade others to follow. Thus, for example, Buddhist writings tell us that Prince Siddhartha Gautama launched Buddhism after his solitary ascendance through the eight stages of Transic insight; Islamic texts tell us that Muhammad founded Islam following the first of many personal, prophetic experiences; Christian writings reveal that Paul first met Jesus, converted to Christianity, and spread the faith more than three decades after Jesus’ death; Joseph Smith, Jr., and his partner, Oliver Cowdery, launched the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints (the Mormon church) after the two men were visited by angels and long-dead disciples of Jesus; and Sun Myung Moon launched the Unification Church after privately receiving direct orders to do so from Jesus himself. The beginnings of Children of God, Christian Science, Eckankar, Elan Vital, I AM, and Theosophy — in fact, the beginnings of all world religions — are equally unverifiable. Never does a large, clearly identifiable group of people experience prophecy and live to tell others about it. Moreover, in a handful of cases wherein large groups of people supposedly witnessed miracles, rarely are these witnesses named or identified in any way that would allow for verification; and in the very exceptional cases involving clearly identified groups of witnesses, never more than one or two of the religion’s current adherents claim to have met or descended directly from the named witnesses. In all these cases, the religion’s credibility rests on the credibility of its one or two founders. While it is certainly possible that the beginnings claimed by any of the thousands of sects and cults included in the world’s more than three hundred major religious traditions could be true, it is easy to imagine how charismatic charlatans could have launched any of these movements. The one known exception to this rule is Judaism. The Torah claims that every Jewish man, woman, and child alive in 1312 B.C.E. — about three million people, according to the Torah — heard God speak at Mount Sinai and survived to teach their descendants about the event. Here we have an easily identifiable group — all of Jewry — who could have verified or denied the story any time during the first two or three generations after the alleged mass prophecy transpired. While it is easy to imagine how most religious mythologies could have been fabricated and spread, understanding how Judaism could be a lie requires more extensive analysis.

How can the national revelation at Mt. Sinai (a.k.a- the Kuzari Principle) be a hoax?
A similar question has been asked regarding the sight of Jesus ascending to heaven by hundreds of people. This claim can be easy to question since supposedly it was only seen by a small percentage of the population.
The revelation at Mt. Sinai, however, is believed to have been witnessed by ALL 3 million Jews (600,000 adult men with wives) who followed Moses in the desert. ALL attained prophecy. There is no tradition counter to this where an entire (large) nation claims to witness such a miraculous event.

    How Old is the
    Torah?

Showing that the Torah is at least 3,313 years old. The Periods
of Jewish History (in brief). Tracing the Torah back to Moses. Who are the
Samaritans, and how do they help prove our case? The Torah was created by Hashem
    2,000 years before Creation.

    How Old is the Torah?

Question: "Is there any evidence that the Bible is more than two
    thousand years old?"

Answer: Yes, in fact there's plenty of evidence of that. We have had
the Torah for at least 3,313 years, when Hashem gave it to us at Mount Sinai.
Can we prove that the Torah is really that old? Yes, we can.

Let us trace the existence of the Torah back through history. We will show
that the Torah existed during the time of Moses and Joshua, and was not created
    later.

First, a brief rundown of the periods of Jewish History, so we can understand
    all this better:

The Resurrection Proof #5: Large Crowd of Eyewitnesses

A large crowd of more than 500 eyewitnesses saw the risen Jesus Christ at the same time. The Apostle Paul records this event in 1 Corinthians 15:6. He states that most of these men and women were still alive when he wrote this letter, about 55 A.D. Undoubtedly they told others about this miracle. Today, psychologists say it would be impossible for a large crowd of people to have had the same hallucination at once. Smaller groups also saw the risen Christ, such as the apostles, and Cleopas and his companion. They all saw the same thing, and in the case of the apostles, they touched Jesus and watched him eat food. The hallucination theory is further debunked because after the ascension of Jesus into heaven, sightings of him stopped.

Mohammed, who could not read or write, claims to have received the Qur’an verbatim in his ear from the angel Gabriel. Yet there have never been any witnesses to this ‘revelation’. In addition Mohammed has never performed any miracle or sign in the presence of witnesses.

Re: Witnessess to Messenger/Prophet Muhammad getting the message from the Angel Gabri

    Salaam Truthseeker63,

Every faith will find credence to its preachings by its followers and 'holes' poked in other faiths to reinforce their own beliefs. Islam suffers no different in this matter.

For me it is a simple case. Islam does not need what is deemed to be required by the others to authenticate its truth as everything else is proof in itself, like the prophet (s.a.w.) being illiterate, no one can create anything similar to the Quran, and the list goes on.

The most amazing fact is that it changed the Arab world into an advanced civilisation without any miracles needing to be performed. That a belief system can be accepted for its good and fair laws under guidance of the Quran and the sunnah until today is a sure 'sign' of truth.

So for the Jews and the Christians, if it WASN"T for the miracles of Jesus, and the Mount Sinai witnesses, their belief in religion would have long ago collapsed. And when that collapsed, they would not be following God's laws anymore. They would be pagans. We, muslims, BELIEVE in the message, we submit to Allah and even without the miracles, we practice the tenets without the feel of the need for the message to be further authenticated.

Sorry, I am speaking for myself although I used the third party form of address..

    Peace

The companions were in the presence of Jibril(as) in the hadith on "Islam, Insan, Ihsan". There are also hadiths in which people witnessed the miracles of our Prophet(peace and blessings be upon him).

However I've never looked at these as "proofs" as I believe the Quran is a proof for itself.

    Asalam wa Alaikom.

Yes, the prophet of Islam (saw) was met in private by the angel Gabriel and there were no witnesses, but the prophet Muhammad (saw) has performed miracles of which the splitting of the moon was one of the famous miracles. In the Qur'an, [54:1] states: "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has been cleft asunder." In front of crouds including the kufar in which they called him a deceiver and magician.

Every nation has been shown signs through the prophets but unfortunately many denied them.
