    Children of Gaza

    Assalaamu alaikum,

I thought some of you out there might like to add your voices to this petition. Avaaz has led some successful campaigns in the past.

May Allah, the Bestower, Reward all those who open their hearts to those who are vulnerable.

A year after the devastating war on Gaza, thousands of children are still sleeping in the rubble of their homes.

Even though it is a clear violation of international law, Israel has blocked basic building materials going in. But no child should be made to live in the ruins of their home, study with bomb blasts through their classrooms, or be operated on in a roofless health centre.

We have a plan to change this -- Avaaz has joined forces with top aid agencies working in Gaza to launch an emergency campaign to call on key donors to demand Israel let the materials in. As the main governments paying to rebuild Gaza, they can insist Israel lifts the restrictions.

If we create a worldwide outcry too loud to ignore, we can force our governments to move beyond words, and ramp up diplomacy to end the blockade. Sign the petition -- it’s time to show our leaders inaction on this humanitarian crisis is unacceptable:

Just 3.6 percent of the 6,700,000 tons of steel bars, cement and aggregates needed to rebuild what was destroyed since the end of the war has been permitted to enter Gaza. At this rate, it could take 19 years before Gaza is rebuilt.

While Egypt's closure of its border has further limited supplies entering Gaza, by far the biggest obstacle to reconstruction is Israel’s blockade. Israel claims the restrictions are for security, but the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross have told Israel imposing this blockade on Gaza is a violation of international law.

The blockade has been ongoing for 8 years, and it has only led to three tragic wars full of bloodshed and destruction. History has taught us that taking away a whole people’s sense of safety and security only creates more suffering and pain for all sides. This blockade isn’t about security, its about zero sum politics - making people suffer to achieve political ends instead of seeking a solution that truly makes all sides better off.

Key governments have spoken out already and committed $3.5 billion to rebuild Gaza. But the best way to get them to take a stronger position that actually shifts the status quo is if they hear that their constituents care. That is where our community comes in. Let’s tell all our leaders that we want action now:

For years our global community has taken action together with Avaazers in Palestine and Israel calling for an end to the repression and violence, and urging the world to act for justice, freedom and peace. Last years indiscriminate attacks killed over 500 innocent children, a year later traumatised children are still desperate for our help. Let’s echo their cries and help ensure their homes are rebuilt.

    With hope and determination,

Fadi, Alice, Melanie, Wissam, Falastine, Mais, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team

Typhoid Outbreak Latest Catastrophe for Palestinians in Besieged Yarmouk Refugee Camp

Independent journalist Patrick Strickland says the international community is failing its duty to protect civilians displaced in the ongoing Syrian civil war

    *- **August 21, 2015

AISAL NOOR, PRODUCER, TRNN: This is Jaisal Noor in Baltimore.

A typhoid outbreak is just the latest catastrophe to be inflicted on Palestinian refugees in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria. They've endured a bombing campaign and siege by the government of Bashar al-Assad, and more recently an invasion by Islamic State militants. UN spokesman Chris Gunness said, quote, never has the imperative for sustained humanitarian access been greater. UN aid workers got access to a nearby neighborhood on Wednesday and confirmed at least ten cases of typhoid. Since December 2012 fighting has driven out the vast majority of some 200,000 refugees that had made Yarmouk their home. The UN has been denied access to Yarmouk since late March. More than 90 percent of more than half a million Palestinian refugees in Syria rely on UN assistance for survival.
