Imaam al-Qurtubi was asked why did Allāh compare the Dunya to be like water in Surah al-Kahf:
And put forward to them the
example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky....
He said:
1. Because water never rests in one place, it is always transforming into another state. Similarly life is always changing from one situation to another.
2. Because water eventually dries up and evaporates just like Dunya will surely fade away.
3. Because water, when it comes at the right amount, brings benefit but when it comes in abundance can cause floods and harm, similarly too much Dunya destroys
man.
I wish that Imam Qurtubi's tafseer could be translated into English. I only found one book that translated just the 1st Juz.
Show no concern for the praise of one whose praise cannot adorn you in any way, nor for the blame of those whose blame cannot dishonor you. And seek the praise of the One whose Praise is all honor and whose blame is all disgrace. Ibn Qayyim
