"THE Ring of Fire has been plagued by dozens of earthquakes in the last 48 hours which has put many along the massive seismic region on high alert that the Big One is coming.
In the last day, some 53 ‘significant’ earthquakes – anything above a magnitude 4.5 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) – along the Ring of Fire.
The Ring of Fire is the largest and most active fault line in the world, stretching from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA and all the way down to the southern tip of South America and causes more than 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes.
Experts know that the Ring of Fire has to potential to unleash some catastrophic quakes – and a spate in the last 24 hours has some concerned.
The strongest of which was a magnitude 8.2 which struck in the Pacific Ocean close to Fiji and Tonga but there have been many others, including a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in the Indonesian island of Lombok.
One prominent place where the Big One – an earthquake which scientists fear could wreak havoc on Earth due to its immense strength – could hit is California.
Experts have been warning for some time that California is overdue a large earthquake, and shaking around the Ring of Fire could be a precursor to this.
Website The Economic Collapse Blog writes in the wake of the seismic activity around the Ring of Fire: “The entire west coast of the US falls along the Ring of Fire, and experts assure us that it is only a matter of time before the seismic tension that is building up along the tectonic plates in that area is released.
“What they need to understand is that this is truly a global phenomenon that we are witnessing, and shaking in one part of the globe can have tremendous implications for people literally living on the other side of the planet.”
Many experts agree with the blog’s sentiments, and confirm that the Big One is on its way to California.
Richard Aster, Professor of Geophysics at Colorado State University wrote recently for the Conversation: “The earthquake situation in California is actually more dire than people who aren't seismologists like myself may realise.
“Although many Californians can recount experiencing an earthquake, most have never personally experienced a strong one.
“For major events, with magnitudes of seven or greater, California is actually in an earthquake drought.”
