I am fluent in German, perhaps I can help you.
I'm not sure how or where to start though.
What are you aiming for? To get some preparation done before you start the course? Are you still at school? Which year are you in?

My daughter started German in school last year ... I will ask her how they first started.

German grammar is a pain ... but I wouldn't worry about that to start with!

I'll get back to you. :thankyou:

Ah! Excellent! thank you glo! i will appreciate all the help i can get.

Yes, i'm a college student, who will be going to his second year on the 13th or 14th after having finished his exams in style (badly, of course).. the thing is, i want to start studying from this moment, because second year is going to be very very tough for me.. *sigh*.Unfortunately, the library does not issue books during the holidays, so i have to rely on the net for resources.

I just need some tips on how to start studying you know.. for example, when i started learning french in school, the teachers concentrated on the verbs first.. 'I am, You are".. etc. As time happened to pass, we started becoming more and more fluent in french.. like calling others ..'You are idiot...' and so on. Lol.

So some tips on how to start, what to watch out for, and give more attention to, would be very helpful.

    Thanks..

Ich habe Deutsche in der schooler gelernt.

Actually if you are familiar with English, much of German will look and sound familiar. The German Classes I took stressed vocabulary the first 2 semesters and then after that concentrated on grammar rules. It seemed to work a little bit for me. I still remember some of it.

    Re: German help.

Okay, bearing in mind that my daughter is younger (12), this is how they started:
    1. Intoducting yourself
    2. Describing yourself and others
    3. Describing your hobbies
    4. Numbers
    5. Then schooly stuff (such as lesson plan, school subjects)
    6. Directions
    7. Food!

What do make of this? See if you can get the gist of the conversation:

    A: Hallo.
    B: Guten Tag.
    A: Wie heisst du?
B: Ich heisse Ali. Und du?
A: Markus. Wie geht es dir?
    B: Mir geht es gut.

    hallo-Hello!

Guten tag-Good morning (thnx Alpha Dude )

    Wie heisst du?-Who are you?

ich heisse Ali.Und du?-I am Ali. And You are?

Markus.Wie geht es dir?- Markus. I didn't understand the second part. 'where are you going?' is it?

Mir geht es gut.-- Err.. what's that?

By the way, when transalating to german, are there name changes as well?..Like the English name 'William' is renamed 'Guilluame' in french.

From Alpha Dude's post, i noticed an excessive usage of the Z alphabet. is it always that way in the language? and why? How on earth does one pronounce something that starts with Z

Cool! BTW, 'Guten Tag' really means 'good day' ... so it can be used all day, not just in the morning.

Markus.Wie geht es dir?- Markus. I didn't understand the second part. 'where are you going?' is it?

Mir geht es gut.-- Err.. what's that?
'Wie geht es dir?' - 'How are you?' (Directly translated it would be closer to 'How goes it [with] you?')

Consequently, 'Mir geht es gut' means .... ??

By the way, when transalating to german, are there name changes as well?..Like the English name 'William' is renamed 'Guilluame' in french.
Yes, it may be interesting to look at different names in different languages.
    William = Wilhelm

From Alpha Dude's post, i noticed an excessive usage of the Z alphabet. is it always that way in the language? and why? How on earth does one pronounce something that starts with Z
An excessive usage of the letter 'Z'??? Call the police!
I have not really thought about that ...

    How to pronounce it?
It is a sharper sound than 's'.
    For example.
sehen(to see) has a soft 's' (more like the english 'z', really. As in 'razor'). Both 'e's are pronouced as 'e' by the way (such as in the word 'bed'), not as 'ee'.

zehn(ten) has a sharp 's'. More like a 'ts' sound (like in the word 'pets')

Does that make sense at all?

    More later ...

Just a quick post to say I found this great site on German pronounciation:
    http://www.ex.ac.uk/german/abinitio/pronounce/
You are going to need a speaker to listen to the words though ...

    Hi Umm Omar

We had a Belgian sectretary at work, who taught me some Flemish.
I loved to say 'Hoe gaat het met jou?' to her in the morning ... it sounds so ... well, cute!

I gather the Flemish pronunciation is slightly different from the Dutch one. She always told me off for saying the 'g' in 'gaat' to harshly ... making it sound like Dutch rather than Flemish.

Please keep adding Dutch translations to this thread ... than I get to lear to! :thankyou:

    peace.
