All I can say is that the list you've shown is WAY off. Firstly, Qatar's GDP per capita is actually between 15-20k, it's usually up and down. Secondly, Ireland is around 31k, and the Netherlands is no where near there. That list is inflated highly for some countries in their time of good. I agree with you that is a big difference. What is even weirder is both your link and the one I posted are from Wikipedia.

Aren't you comparing two different things: nominal GDP per capita and Purchace Power Parity per capita? One relates to a crude measure of wealth: total income divided by the population. The other relates, as some have pointed out, to the cost of living. Europe is an expensive place to live so you need to earn a lot. America, and most Third World countries, is cheap so you don't.
PPPs are usually the better measure.

Thanks HeiGou, I'll check out the PPP's because this is peaking my curiosity. I also want to point out that social customs also affect the standard of living. For example, a lot people I know in the ME do not understand why money doesn't go very far in the US. Several of my friends are accustomed to living with their parents a large portion of their adult lives. There's many factors affecting the standard of living of people in various nations.

HeiGou, SS, the two aren't too far apart, really, probably just a single digit apart, nothing more. The thing is that some nations, like Qatar, have been SUPER-inflated.:X
