Dozens of copies of the Quran found strewn all over the place, including in the drain, at a paper recycling company in Seremban, Berita Harian reported.
The copies were found by the company's part-time worker Mohammad Anuar Bukhari, 43, who reported the matter to state Mufti's office.
He said he was cleaning the drain when he found the copies all over the place, including the drain.
He found more copies nearby. He believed the books were sold to the company for quick money.
Mohammad Anuar said the company should not be blamed because it only bought old papers and books for recycling purposes.
A check by officials from the state Mufti's office found dozen of copies, some of which were destroyed after getting soaked in the drain water, while others were squashed by piles of papers and torn.
Some were even found smeared with dog faeces and mud.
The officials collected the books in 10 gunny sacks and took them to Sikamat Mosque to be dried and for proper disposal.
Other religious textbooks for secondary schools containing Quranic verses also found under a pile of old papers.
Based on stamps on them, the textbooks were believed to be from a school in JAsin.
A research officer from the state religious department, Khir Johari Abas, said the weight of the Quran copies totalled about 220 kg.
"We are not sure of the number of copies because some are badly damaged," he said, adding that the parties who wanted to dispose of the Quran should have referred the matter to the religious department.
