india was a british colony. before independence, it was partitioned and pakistan (east and west) was created. east pakistan broke off from the west in 1971 and became bangladesh.
if it had been up to india to grant independence to pakistan, there would probably be no pakistan. (in fact pakistan became independent one minute before india for this very reason.)
