Narrated anas(may allah pleased with him)whenever the prophet(saw)spoke a sentence(said a thing),he used to repeat it thrice so that the people could understand it properly from him and whenever he asked permission to enter,(he knocked the door)thrice with greating.(bukhari)

anyone who has every taken any courses in Communication skills will know that is very sound advice. It really does take hearing something 3 times before a listener has any chance of comprehending what was said.
