Sunni learning and understanding about Shia's

    Report bad ads?

    Salaam,

Growing up as a child, i have always been interested in other religions, what they believe in, and most importantly why. I have grown up with a mixture of friends, from all back grounds. I am a Sunni.,

Last year, when it was the time of maharram, for the Shia's, i was really anxious to know about there beliefs. I have learnt about other religions etc, and when it came to know about Shias, i didnt know anything. A few of my friends, are Shias, and i hate the fact that sunni muslims, have something against there beliefs, just as you would want others to respect your beliefs, you should do the same with them.

In the town that i am studying at, there is a Shia mosque, and they had a 10 day period where all Shias visited the mosque to pay there respects in there holy month and pray etc.

I asked as many questions as i could to understand the Shias beliefs, and my girlfriend, asked me if wanted to go to the mosque with her, to learn about maharram etc. I was happy to do this, as i was purely going to learn something. My dad gave me permission to go, and kindly asked me to stay for the talks etc, but to leave at the time of matham'. (hope i said that right), as he believed it was personal to them. So thats what i did.

I am so glad i went, because i learnt alot, about there beliefs and why they do what they do. However, when my friend ( a sunni) learnt of my attendance to the mosque, his mate said that i was betraying the sunnis, and that i shouldnt have gone. If this was true then why did my dad give me permission to go?. My dad is very knowledged on islam, and he taught the Qu'raan for 6 years before he came to the uk when he married. So i trust him.

Then why, is it frowned upon amongst some sunni muslims. Shia's are muslims too. And i have heard about people who get married where one is a sunni, and one is a Shia.

So was it wrong for me to go?

    13. No sectarian issues allowed. We are promoting the unity of Islam. Allah (Exalted is He) said in Surah Al-An'âm, verse 159:

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad -- Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allâh, Who then will tell them what they used to do.
