Tawheed: the reason for our existence

If you’ve ever read a translation of the Qur’an before or any books about Islam, it’s highly likely that you stumbled across the word Tawheed(or Tauhid), commonly translated as “Islamic Monotheism” or “Oneness of Allah”. It is also likely that these phrases didn’t really make any sense to you and perhaps do not fully explain the seriousness and importance of Tawheedin Islam. If you find yourself nodding your head and saying yes, this article is definitely for you, so keep reading.
Tawheedis the main subject matter of the Qur’an and the very reason for our existence. Allah (or God) created us for one reason; that is to worship, obey and submit to Him exclusively, no one else. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an: “I did not create the jinn (unseen beings) and humankind except to worship Me.”(EMQ 55:56)

Therefore, you were not born to party, play football, work 9–5, record an album, or do whatever it is you like doing. You were born into this world and given the gift of life in order to solelyobey Allah – no one else – in all spheres of your life. And no person can obey Allah exclusivelyunless they firstly reject all false godsthat peoplefollow, worship and obey besides Him.

To make things a little bit more complicated, in Islam any person or thing that is worshipped, followed or obeyed besides Allah is called “Taaghout”. Rejecting Taaghout is the most important aspect ofTawheedbecause you cannot worship and obey Allah exclusivelyunless you firstly reject falsehood and anything that is worshipped besides Him (i.e. Taaghout).

Many people worship many different things. Muslims worship Allah alone, whereas Christians worship Jesus (or believe he is the son of God). Some people worship the devil, amulets, rocks, idolsor stones; others worship the sun and the moon. Some people worship their own desires, celebrities and fame; others worship those in authority, by obeying their every command. Everyone worships something, whether they like it or not.

But the truth is, not one of these gods (or deities) is worthy of your worship and obedience except Allah alone. They cannot hear your prayers, prevent harm from reaching you or benefit you in anyway, and they certainly have no right to tell you what is good (legal) or bad (illegal). It is only Allah who is worthy of our obedience as well as thosewhom He tells us to obey – such as His Messengers and those who rule by His laws – as He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and all that which is between them.
Most of the ills and problems that are present in society today have arisen due to the fact that people have started to worshipmen instead of God, by taking them as lawmakers besides Him. Worship doesn’t just involve bowing down or prostrating to something; it also means to obey and follow.

But the reality is that no man or woman, king or queen, president or judge, is worthy of our obedience unless they follow the laws of Allah. We should reject and disown any person or thing that is worshipped besides Allah and onlyobey and submit to Him. This is the meaning of Tawheed.
