10 steps to getting closer to Allah

10 that Result in Allah’s Love For His Slave and the Slave’s Love for his Lord

1: Reciting the Qur’an while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it.

2: Getting closer to Allah (’azza wajal) by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds. This is as is stated in a Hadith Qudsi: “My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him.”

3: Continual remembrance of Allah (’azza wajal) under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allah (’azza wajal) is determined by this.

4: Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires.

5: The heart being avid of Allah’s Names and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge.

6: Observing Allah’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open.

7: And this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allah (’azza wajal).

8: Being alone with Allah (’azza wajal) during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night while reading His Book and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting.

9
: Sitting with the beloved and sincere, benefitting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others.

10
: Remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah (’azza wajal).

Allah wants us to be closer to him!

Narrated Annas (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "My Lord says, 'If My
slave comes nearer to me for a span, I go nearer to him for a cubit; and if
he comes nearer to Me for a cubit, I go nearer to him for the span of
outstretched arms; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.' "

Jazaak'Allah Khair bro May Allah(SWT) bless you and your efforts. Ameen

very good tips which we all can work on :)

Seeking closeness to Allah in the last third portion of the night

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "Our Lord, the
Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us
when the last third of the night remains, saying: 'Is there anyone to
invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me,
so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My
forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?' "

Assalamu-alaikum,

JazakAllah khair for a very benefical thread.

Everyone should make a copy of these lists and refer to them at least weekly - as a reminder (because we tend to forget) and to ensure that we are actually acting upon them (its easy to read these beautiful threads - but are we making the effort to implement them in our lives?)

(Ps. the attachment in the first post does not seem to open.)

Just wanted to share a few simple changes one can make to ones life, that can also have a profound impact on ones imaan, insha Allah.

1. Removing music and TV from our lives.
Its really difficult to draw closer to Allah (subhanawataála) with the presence of these 2 negative forces in our lives.
Its almost as if theres a 'barrier' between you and your Rabb as long as you engage in these zina-filled forms of mind-control.
Theres no way to describe the difference experienced in the quality of your salaah, the ease of remembering Allah (frequently during the day), the calmness that descends in your heart and mind (its literally de-cluttered from all the nonsense that once occupied it!) - Alhamdulillah.
.......its needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated.

Now that we are in Ramadaan, this is the best opportunity to remove these forces from our lives - and keep it as such thereafter.
(Trust me - the TV is not needed at all, not even for news - you can read everything on-line nowadays).

2. Listening to Quraan with translation (if you dont understand arabic)
Swop your CDs in your car for one everlasting, ever-fulfilling, all encompassing recitation - the Word of Allah.
Do you know how many tilawaats of quraan can be completed on your way to work, stuck in traffic etc?
SubhanAllah - its life-changing.

3. Change your appearance
Looking like a muslim on the outside - impacts the way we feel on the inside.
For women: if you are unable to read salaah in the clothes that you leaving home in, then you need to review your hijab.
For men: the beard is not only the sunnah of our beloved nabi (salllahu alaihi wasalam), but it differentiates you from the disbelievers <-- this is your hijab : )

Its really amazing - the more ways of the kuffar we give up (including their fashion sense), the more attached we feel to our deen.
The cloak/ abaya (for women) and the kurta/ thawb (for men) never goes out of fashion......and you feel like a muslim at all times ; ) (which also means that the remembrance of Allah enters your heart more frequently).

4. If you are unable to keep yourself in the company of the pious - then you can do so by down-loading their talks/ lectures and listening to them frequently.
We tend to forget very quickly - so its sometimes necessary to listen to the same talk 2/3 times : )
Also, attend workshops/ seminars in your area - whatever it is, make the effort to be there (do some research beforehand though, as many interesting deviations from this deen do exist)
Join a hulqa group.
Start arabic classes.
Get involved with charity organisations - dawah projects, orphanages, etc.
Theres so much that can be done......not only are you surrounding yourself by like-minded people, but you are investing in your Aakhirah. Alhamdulillah.

5. Read!
The first word revealed to Muhammed (sallalahu alaihi wasalam) was 'Iqra' - READ!
How many books have you read in the last year? (does not include newspapers/ magazines : ) )
Read islamic literature by our classic scholars <-- theres a wealth of information that few chose to seek out.
Why do we waste our times reading fashion mags, tabloids, even the newspaper? (our eyes should be saved from its zina-filled pages and mostly wasteful, biased pieces of information, insha Allah.)

6. Submitting yourself to the will of Allah (subhanawataála) - completely.
This is what Islam means - SUBMISSION to His divine laws.
Which means that as soon as you realise that you are doing something that is displeasing to Allah - you discard it IMMEDIATELY.

Allah is our Lord.
We are His slaves.
Its not about bargaining/ trying to find the right fatwa to match our desires.
Its about saying: 'This is the command of my Rabb, and I submit to it'.

This short, fleeting life can not even compare to Jannah!

One day, we will be lined up, on one of the most fearful days of all - Al-Qiyamat, and we feel like the biggest fools to have KNOWN about what is to come - but not changed our ways.
Not LIVED for Allah (subhanawataála).

“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)”

[al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]

^ This is our only (real) purpose here.
May we never forget this, insha Allah.

May Allah (subhanawatáala) keep us on the path of the straight and righteous.
Ameen

The Greatest Victory for the Believer is Allah's Good Pleasure

Allah has promised the men and women of the believers Gardens with rivers flowing under them, remaining in them timelessly, forever, and fine dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. And Allah's good pleasure is even greater. That is the great victory. (Surat at-Tawba, 72)

So let us do our utmost to live this life trying to gain the pleasure of Allah because if Allah is pleased with us in this life then he will also be pleased with us in the hereafter and that is the greatest pleasure for the believer in more so than ALL the pleasures of Paradise put together!

Get to Know Allah [SWT] Through His 99 Beautiful Names

How can you love Allah (glorified and exalted be He) and want to get closer to Him if you don’t know Him that well? We fall in love with people as we get to know them more and realize that they have a lot of beautiful qualities and characteristics. Of course Allah (glorified and exalted be He) is above any analogy, but you need know Him more. Wanting to get closer alone won’t do you any good without falling in love with your Creator. Start with the name of Al-Wadud, the Ever-Loving. Allah’s (glorified and exalted be He) love for you is unconditional. He does not need or want anything from you in return. He loves you so He keeps giving you even if you disobey Him. Ask Allah (glorified and exalted be He) with His 99 Names.

If you want to get closer to Him, pray with His name Al-Qareeb (The Close One) and ask Him to bring you closer to Him. And with Al-Wadud ask Him to love you more and make you love Him more. It’s as simple as that. We tend to overthink stuff and forget that if we seek refuge in Allah (glorified and exalted be He), He will make everything easier on us.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrates that the Prophet [SAW] said, “If Allah loves a person, He calls Gabriel saying, ‘Allah loves so and-so; O Gabriel! Love him.’ Gabriel would love him and make an announcement amongst the inhabitants of the Heaven. ‘Allah loves so-and-so, therefore you should love him also,’ and so all the inhabitants of the Heaven would love him, and then he is granted the pleasure of the people on the earth.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
