One of the stories I love, and one that shows the greatness of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, and the vastness of His mercy toward His servants, is the story of the man who killed one hundred people, as mentioned in the authentic hadith of the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim..

The story tells of a man from an earlier nation who killed ninety-nine people. Then he began to think about repentance. He asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a worshipper. When he asked him, “Can I repent?” the worshipper said, “No.” So he killed him, completing one hundred.

This may be one of the clearest examples of the danger of speaking about Allah without knowledge. The man was asking about the most knowledgeable person on earth, but he was directed to a worshipper, and not every worshipper is a scholar. Perhaps the worshipper thought the number of people killed was too great, so he gave him a ruling without knowledge. His answer then became the reason for another crime.

Here we learn a great lesson: Worship alone is not enough without knowledge. A person should not rush to give a religious ruling or speak about Allah without knowledge. Rather, he should say, “I do not know,” when he is not sure about what he is saying.

May Allah have mercy on that worshipper and forgive him. His mistake came from ignorance, even though the result of his ruling was serious.

As for the man, he did not give in to despair. His desire to repent returned, so he again asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a scholar. When he told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him, “Can I repent?” the scholar said: «“Yes. And who could stop you from repenting?”»

What a great statement! He did not say to him, “You have gone too far,” nor did he say, “Your sins are too great to be forgiven.” Instead, he opened the door of hope for him and then showed him the practical way to repent.

He said to him: «“Go to such-and-such a land, for there are people there who worship Allah. Worship Allah with them, and do not return to your land, because it is an evil land.”»

It seems that this scholar was not only knowledgeable about the religious ruling, but also had insight and understood human nature. He knew that repentance is not only regret in the heart. It also needs a real change in a person’s life. That is why he told him to leave the environment where he was used to sinning, stay away from bad company, and move to an environment that would help him obey Allah and remain steadfast.

The man followed his advice and set out toward the land of the righteous. On the way, death came to him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment argued about him. The angels of mercy said, “He came as a repentant person, turning his heart toward Allah,” while the angels of punishment said, “He never did any good
deed.”

So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, sent an angel in human form to judge between them. He said, “Measure the distance between the two lands. Whichever one he is closer to, then he belongs to its people.” They measured the distance and found him closer to the land of the righteous by one handspan. So the angels of mercy took him, and Allah forgave him.

In the narration of al-Bukhari, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, revealed to the evil land to move farther away, and to the righteous land to come closer, until the man became closer to the land of the righteous by one handspan. So Allah forgave him.

The fact that Allah commanded the earth to contract so the man would die closer to the land of the righteous shows that sincere intention and sincerity (niyyah and ikhlas) are fully recognized, even if the journey was not completed.

How great this story is!

It teaches us never to lose hope in the mercy of Allah, no matter how great a person’s sins are or how bad his actions may be. The door of repentance remains open as long as the servant is sincere in returning to Allah and tries to correct what he has done wrong.

This story also teaches us that the environment a person lives in affects his behavior, character, and steadfastness, and that bad company may open the doors of evil for a person, while good company helps him obey Allah, remain steadfast, and stay on the right path.

It also teaches us the importance of knowledge, and that worship, when it is not accompanied by knowledge and understanding, may cause a person to make mistakes without realizing it. It also teaches us that giving religious rulings without knowledge is a dangerous matter.

On the other hand, we see in the scholar’s response how knowledge can be a mercy to people. He did not only tell the man that the door of repentance was open. He also showed him what would help him make his repentance sincere: leaving the evil land, leaving its people, and staying with the righteous.

The story also shows the great vastness of the mercy of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. Allah did not close the door of repentance to this man, who had killed one hundred people. When his desire to return to Allah became sincere and he truly tried to do so, the mercy of Allah reached him.

And this reminds us of the words of Allah, the Exalted:

“Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."” [Az-Zumar: 53]

No matter how great a servant’s sins are, he should never lose hope in the mercy of Allah. Rather, he should hasten to repent, be sincere in returning to his Lord, and join his repentance with faith and righteous deeds. Allah, the Exalted, said:

“But as for one who had repented, believed, and done righteousness, it is promised by Allah that he will be among the successful.” [Al-Qasas: 67]

Indeed, one of Allah’s kindnesses and favors to His servants is that sincere repentance together with righteous deeds is not only a reason for sins to be forgiven. Allah may even change bad deeds into good deeds. Allah, the Exalted, said:

“ Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” [Al-Furqan: 70]

And He, Glorified is He, said:

“ And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah with [accepted] repentance.” [Al-Furqan: 71]

Never despair, and do not let the many sins you have come between you and your Lord. If you sin, do not let Satan convince you that you are far from Allah. Instead, return to Him, flee to Him, and ask Him for His mercy and forgiveness. Allah, the Exalted, said:

“So flee to Allah. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.” [Adh-Dhariyat: 50]

Fleeing to Allah means fleeing from disobedience to His obedience, from His anger to His mercy, and from the path of heedlessness to the path of faith and righteous deeds.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about this man’s story is that his past, despite the great number of sins in it, did not come between him and the mercy of Allah when he was sincere in his repentance. He left the evil land, left behind the evil he was used to, headed toward the land of the righteous, and died while he was on his way to Allah. The mercy of Allah reached him, and his repentance was accepted.

So do not say: “I have waited too long,” and do not say: “My sins are too great to be forgiven.” Rather, say: “I will return to Allah.”

Allah, the Exalted, said:

“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous.” [Aal-Imran: 133]

The distance between you and repentance may be only one step, and your sincere turning to Allah may be the first step on the path that leads you to His mercy.

Whoever turns to Allah sincerely will find that the mercy of Allah is greater than he thinks. It includes everything:

“but My mercy encompasses all things.” [Al-A‘raf: 156]

And among Allah’s mercy is that the door of repentance remains open to a person as long as he is alive, before his soul reaches his throat and the sun rises from the west.
