A Teacher’s Mistake
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-UthaymeenO noble Shaykh, What must I do in regards to one of my teachers making a mistake, especially when the mistake is in matters of the Deen (religion), and I am sure of the correct answer?
This is a very important question, because we find that some of the teachers do not want anyone to tell them that they are mistaken, no matter how big/many their mistakes are. This is incorrect, because every human is liable to make mistakes. If one was to make a mistake, and is then told of his mistake, then this is from the blessings of Allaah (upon him), and this is so that the people do not follow that mistake of his.
However, a student should have some form of diplomacy, he should not stand up [during the class] in front of the rest of the students and refute the teacher, this is improper behavior/manners. Rather after the class is finished [he is to advice the teacher]. If the teacher is convinced, then it is upon him to announce this [mistake] during the next class. If the teacher is not convinced [and the student is sure] then it is upon the student to stand up in front of the students during the next class and say: “O teacher, you have said such and such and this is incorrect.”
