[Piousness of a Shepard]

Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah (glorified and exalted be He) would say:

Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant [his sins] and have admitted him to Paradise.

It was related by an-Nasa'i with a good Isnad (chain of authorities).

[Reciting Essence of Qur'an - Incomplete prayers]

A prayer performed by someone who has not recited the Essence of the Quran (*1) during it is deficient (and he repeated the word three times), incomplete. Someone said to Abu Hurayrah: [Even though] we are behind the imam? (*2) He said: Recite it to yourself, for I have heard the Prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be up on him) say:

Allah (mighty and sublime be He), had said: I have divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. When the servant says: Al-hamdu lillahi rabbi l-alamin (*3), Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: My servant has praised Me. And when he says: Ar-rahmani r-rahim (*4), Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: My servant has extolled Me, and when he says: Maliki yawmi d-din (*5), Allah says: My servant has glorified Me - and on one occasion He said: My servant has submitted to My power. And when he says: Iyyaka na budu wa iyyaka nasta in (*6), He says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. And when he says: Ihdina s-sirata l- mustaqim, siratal ladhina an amta alayhim ghayril-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dallin (*7), He says: This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.

(*1) Surat al-Fatihah, the first sura of Qur'an. (*2) i.e. standing behind the imam (leader) listening to him reciting al-Fatihah. (*3) "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds." (*4) "The Merciful, the Compassionate".(*5) "Master of the Day of Judgement". (*6) "It is You we worship and it is You we ask for help". (*7) "Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favours, not of those against whom You are angry, nor of those who are astray".

It was related by Muslim (also by Malik, at-Tirmidhi, Abu-Dawud, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).

Allah's Messenger (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) said:"None is more patient than Allah against the harmful and annoying words He hears (from the people): They ascribe children to Him, yet He bestows upon them health and provision."

Narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ashari (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Sahih Bukhari transmitted it. Vol 9:#475 of Sahih Bukhari.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Ansari persons asked for (something) from Allah's Apostle (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) and he gave them. They again asked him for (something) and he again gave them. And then they asked him and he gave them again till all that was with him finished. And then he (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) said "If I had anything, I would not keep it away from you. (Remember,) whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience."

Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Sahih Bukhari transmitted it. Vol 2:#548 of Sahih Bukhari.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Prophet (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her to fear Allah and be patient. She said to him, "Go away, for you have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine." And she did not recognize him. Then she was informed that he was the Prophet (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam). So she went to the house of the Prophet (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) and there she did not find any guard. Then she said to him, "I did not recognize you." He (Sal-allahu- aleihi-wasallam) said, "Verily, the patience is at the first stroke of a calamity."

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Sahih Bukhari transmitted it. Vol 2:#372 of Sahih Bukhari.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allah's Apostle (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) said: "Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shown resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it".

Narrated by Suhaib ibn Sinan ar-Rumi (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Muslim transmitted it. Hadith No.5297 of Mishkat al-Masabih.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I heard Allah's Apostle (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) saying, "Allah said, 'If I deprive my slave of his two beloved things (i.e., his eyes) and he remains patient, I will let him enter Paradise in compensation for them."

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Sahih Bukhari transmitted it. Vol 7:#557 of Sahih Bukhari.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Prophet (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) said, "Whenever any of you turns his look towards one who has been given more in wealth and physique, let him look towards one who is inferior to himself". In the narration of Muslim, the Prophet (Sal-allahu-aleihi-wasallam) said, "Look at him who is inferior to you, and don't look at him who is superior to you. It is therefore, more proper that you should not consider the gifts of Allah upon you as insignificant".

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Bukhari and Muslim transmitted it. Hadith No.5242 of Mishkat al-Masabih.
