Assalaamu alaikum,
It became very popular about 20 years ago to talk of the health benefits of drinking wine. But as a new report from the OECD highlights: the harms of alcohol far outweigh it's benefits…
In 2010, only 38.3% of the world population aged 15 years and older had drunk alcohol in the past 12 months. Nevertheless, alcohol’s impact on global health is dramatic. In 2012 about 3.3 million deaths were attributable to alcohol consumption, 5.9% of all deaths. This is greater than the proportion of all deaths from HIV/AIDS (2.8%), violence (0.9%) and tuberculosis (1.7%) put together. In terms of the global burden of disease and injury, measured in disability adjusted life years (DALY s), 5.1% of all years of potential life lost in the world in 2012 due to premature mortality and disability were attributable to alcohol consumption (WHO, 2014).

… thus confirming what God, Glory to Him, the High, Told us in the Qur'an (2:219)
Shakir: They ask you about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit. And they ask you as to what they should spend. Say: What you can spare. Thus does Allah make clear to you the communications, that you may ponder.
As the report emphasizes, alcohol does not only damage the liver, but it contributes to a whole range of health problems, from cancer, to heart disease, to injuries, and many others.
The idea that alcohol consumption should be encouraged for it's health benefits, then, is absolutely ridiculous.
May Allah, the One Who Knows, Help us to see clearly His Truth.
