An act performed after burial...

After the grave of the deceased has been filled with earth, it is recommended to put water on the grave starting with the head and then going around the edges and back to the head.
  1. What is the religious significance of this act?
  2. Why is it recommended?
 
No sister, there is no religious significance for it. It is done merely to stop the dust on the grave flying around and help it to settle. It's common practice in hot dusty countries to sprinkle water on loose earth in courtyards and floors to prevent dust flying up and troubling people, especially before sweeping. The act of sprinkling water on the grave does not 'cool' the punishments/fire for its dweller.
