Stated Ash-Sha'bee (Rahimahullah) the Taab'ee (d.103H) -
"If anything from this affair of mine were to be accepted , I do not reckon that I would relate anything except that which the Ahlul-Hadeeth have united upon"
Refer Tadhkirathul Huffadh (1/83) of adh-Dhahabee (rahimahullah).

Nu'aym b. 'Abdillah, the scribe of the righteous Caliph 'Umar b. 'Abd Al-'Azîz – Allah have mercy on him, narrates that 'Umar b. 'Abd Al-'Azîz said:
"The fear of showing off and vying with others prevents me from saying much of what could be said."

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allah have mercy on him – said:
"When a man sought knowledge, it would not be long before it could be seen in his humbleness, his sight, upon his tongue and his hands, in his prayer, in his speech and in his disinterest (zuhd) in worldly allurements. And a man would acquire a portion of knowledge and put it into practice, and it would be better for him than the world and all it contains – if he owned it he would give it in exchange for the hereafter."
Ibn Al-Mubârak, Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqâ`iq Vol.1 p.156.

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

Al-Dhahabî describes Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd as an Imâm, an example, and Shaykh Al-Islâm.

He is renowned as one of the pious Salaf, and many wise and inspiring statements are related from him. Allâh have mercy on him. Here is the story of how he made tawbah.

Al-Fadl b. Mûsâ reports:
Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd used to be a highwayman, between Abyûrd and Sarkhas. He was in love with a girl, and the cause of his repentance was that he was once climbing a wall to meet her when he heard someone reciting the following verses:

Has not the time come for those who believe, that their hearts should be humbled and submitted (to Allah)…? [Al-Hadîd: 16]

When he heard this, Al-Fudayl said, “Indeed my Lord, it is time.” So he left, and seeking a night’s shelter he found himself at some ruins, and there he saw some travelers. Some of them said, “We should move on.” Others said, “Wait until morning, Al-Fudayl operates in this area, he will rob us.”

Al-Fudayl said, “So I thought and said to myself: I spend the night in sin and there are some Muslims here who fear me; I think that Allah only led me to them so that I might take lesson and stop what I am doing. O Allah! I have repented, and as part of my tawbah I will live next to Al-Bayt Al-Harâm (in Makkah).

Al-Dhahabî, Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ` in his biography of Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd.

Abû Hurayrah – Allah be pleased with him – said:
There is no illness that afflicts me more beloved to me than fever: it enters every part of me and [because of it] Allah the Mighty and Sublime gives every part of me its share of reward.

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Al-Hakim recorded that Hakim bin Mu`awiyah bin Haydah narrated that his father said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«أَنْتُمْ تُوَفُّون سَبْعِينَ أُمَّةً، أَنْتُمْ خَيْرُهَا، وَأَنْتُمْ أَكْرَمُ عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَل»
You are the final of seventy nations, you are the best and most honored among them to Allah.
This is a well-known Hadith about which At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan'', and which is also narrated from Mu`adh bin Jabal and Abu Sa`id.

Ibn Kathir commented on this Hadith in his Tafsir of 3:110, after mentioning it:
The Ummah of Muhammad achieved this virtue because of its Prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him, the most regarded of Allah's creation and the most honored Messenger with Allah. Allah sent Muhammad with the perfect and complete Law that was never given to any Prophet or Messenger before him.

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud narrated:
“A man from among the humans went out and was met by a man from among the jinn, who said: “Will you wrestle with me? If you throw me to the ground, I will teach you a verse which, if you recite it when you enter your house, no devil will enter.”

So, he wrestled with him and threw him to the ground.

He said: “I see that you are very small and your forearms are like the front paws of a dog. Are all the jinn like this, or only you?”

He said: “I am strong amongst them. Let us wrestle again.”

So, they wrestled again and the human threw him to the ground.
So, the jinn said: “Recite Ayat al-Kursi, for no one recites it when he enters his house except that Satan leaves, passing wind like a donkey.”"
It was said to Ibn Mas’ud: “Was that man ‘Umar?”

He said: “Who else could it have been, other than ‘Umar?”
Majma’ az-Zawa’id’; 9/71, and it is authentic

The Messenger of Allah

said:
“The angel on the left does not write down anything until six hours* have passed after a Muslim does a bad deed. If he regrets it and asks Allah for forgiveness, he casts it aside [does not write it down], otherwise he writes down one bad deed.”
Reported by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Emaan; classed as hasan by al-Albani in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah, 1209.

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullaah) said:
“I saw a people from the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) saying:
‘Whoever acts without knowledge, then that which he corrupts and ruins is greater than that which he sets aright. The one who does deeds without ‘ilm is like a traveller without a path, so seek knowledge with such a seeking that does not harm ‘ibaadah (worship) and seek (to perform) ‘ibaadah such that it does not harm ‘ilm.
And a man from amongst them would seek knowledge until it was readily seen from his khushoo’ (humbleness), his zuhd (asceticism), his speech and sight.”

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

Ibn Qayyim (rahimullah) said:

The heart becomes sick, as the body becomes sick, and its remedy is Tawbah (repentance) and protection from transgression. It becomes rusty as the mirror becomes rusty, and its clarity is obtained by dhikr (remembrance). It becomes naked as the body becomes naked, and its beautification is Taqwa (God conscience). It becomes hungry and thirsty as the body becomes hungry and its food and drink is Ilm, dependence, love and servitude’

Yunus bin Jubair said to Jundub: "Advise us."

He replied:
I advise you with taqwa (piety) of Allah, and advise you with the Qur'an, for It is the light in the darkness of night, and a guidance in the day. Act according with what you have of [your] health and poverty, and if calamities presents iteslf, be sure to give up your money before you give up your faith. If the calamities exceed, give up your money and yourself before you give up your faith. The ruined is one who ruined his faith, and the denied is the one who denied his faith, and know that there isn't poverty after Jannah, and no richness after hellfire.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allaah expiates some of his sins for that."

Recorded by Al-Bukhari in Kitaab Al-Marad (Book on Disease), no.5641, 5642; also recorded by Muslim in Kitaab Al-Birr Was-Silah (Book on Righteousness and Keeping Good Relations with Others), no. 52/2573

Re: ar- Raqâ’iq - The Heart Softening Narrations

It is narrated in a saheeh report that our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever gives up a thing for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will compensate him with something better than it.”

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Hijaab al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, p. 49.
