When learning a language it is smart to first learn the letters, then words, followed by phrases, and eventually sentences become easier to understand.


This thread will include, in Shaa Allah, phrases which include:


  • Adjective phrases
  • Prepositional phrases
  • Constructs
  • Relative clause phrases
  • Phrases beginning with 'an
  • Verbal Noun phrases
  • Active and Passive participle phrases
  • Phrases with superlative


Most of these phrases can act as subjects and objects of verbal sentences and subjects and predicates of nominal sentences in Arabic.

Construct (المضاف والمضاف إليه)



كُتُبُ الْحَدِيثِ


The first word is Kutub which means books

The second word is Al-Hadith which means narrations of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam)

Together they form a construct (المضاف والمضاف إليه) which means:

(The) Books of Hadith (i.e. The Books containing the narrations of the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
 
Prepositional Phrase



عَلَى النَّبِيِّ

On the Prophet


على

means on and is a preposition


النبي

is a noun and means the Prophet
 
Construct (المضاف والمضاف إليه)


إِهْمَالُ التَّسْمِيَةِ

Negligence or omission of saying Bismillah (i.e. In the Name of Allah)


إِهْمَالُ this is a verbal noun which means to neglect or to omit

التَّسْمِيَةِ refers to saying Bismillah (i.e. In the Name of Allah)

Together they form a construct which refers to the act of omitting the saying of Bismillah
 
Construct (المضاف والمضاف إليه)


تاركُ الصلاةِ

Taarik(u) Al-Salaat(i)

Taarik is an active participle and means He who leaves or abandons

Al-Salaat means prayer

Together they form a construct which means

[the one] who leaves prayer
 
Adjectival Phrase




التَّعريفُ المختارُ

Al-Ta'reef(u) Al-Mukhtaar(u)




التَّعريفُ means definition, identification, characterization

المختارُ means chosen, preferred, selected


In Arabic the adjective follows the noun in contrast to to English in which the noun follows the adjective

Together they mean

The chosen definition or
The selected definition or
The preferred definition or

The chosen characterization or
The selected characterization or
The preferred characterization and so on...
 
Prepositional Phrase


عَلَى الذَّبِيحَةِ

'alaa Al-dhabeehat(i)


The preposition 'alaa means on
Al-dhabeeha means that which is slaughtered (of an animal fit for slaughtering)

The phrase means

on the animal which is slaughtered
 
Construct + Prepositional Phrase


Now let us combine two phrases we have learned so far into one



In post 4 you learned

إِهْمَالُ التَّسْمِيَةِ

which meant omitting or neglecting the saying of saying Bismillaah




If we combine this phrase with the one we learned above (عَلَى الذَّبِيحَةِ) we get

إِهْمَالُ التَّسْمِيَةِ عَلَى الذَّبِيحَةِ

neglecting the saying of Bismillaah on the animal which is slaughtered




The prepositional phrase on the animal which is slaughtered is related to Al-Tasmiyah (saying Bismillaah)

The phrase refers to when someone is slaughtering an animal and omits the saying of Bismillaah

الذين أساءوا


الذين This is a relative pronoun which means those who, those whom, etc. based on context

أساءوا This is a past tense verb which means they [plural males] did evil

The phrase means


Those who did evil
 
Construct


إدخال اليد

'idkhaal Al-Yad(i)


إدخال this is a verbal noun which means entering, to enter

اليد this is a noun which means the hand

Together when in construct the phrase means

the (act of) entering the hand (i.e. into something)
 
Construct


دِينُ الْإِسْلَامِ

دين = Religion

الْإِسْلَامِ = Islaam


Together, in construct, they mean

[The] Religion [of] Islaam
