sometimes it's good to advertise charity, like when you feel people may be encouraged to give if someone saets the ball rolling.
like when the Romans started making moves near the border and the Prophet pbuh announced that he'd meet them and stood in the mosque, gave a sermon and called for contributions - but it was just before harvest time and people were low on cash,
but uthman (ra) stood up in front of everyone and said i'll provide the mounts and equipment plus food load for such and such number of warriors,
the Prophet pbuh called again
and again uthman stood up and went home and poured a whole hoard of gold coins in the messenger of Allah's lap.
and the Prophet pbuh was pleased beyond words.
this is because it spurred others on.
similarly it is not good to show off one's jihad unless they are among cowards and are in a position to project it positively. this way the cowards feel like standing up, and it also takes away the negative conditioning and shows it to be something to be proud of.
then there are times when it's best to hide and give it to the person who needs it and it also keeps their dignity, this also keeps one's sincerity for the sake of Allah in tact.

Most agree that doing obligatory acts in Islam (e.g Zakaat) is best done openly - so as to encourage others to fulfill their duties as well.
However, when giving voluntary charity (sadaqah) - then this is best done in private.
I've never heard that, but it makes good sense to me.
A good point that giving zakat openly may encourage others to do likewise. (I guess that can be done without showing off or being self-important!)

I think drawing attention to those npo's/ charities that are legitamite and deserving of our support is important.
There are many who are unsure as to which organisations are reputable/ what work is currently being done by our brothers and sisters around the world - and certainly it can be beneficial in this regard as well.
Insha Allah.
Amen to that.

Strangely we have pretty much derailed this thread - which wasn't about charitable giving at all, but about avoiding angry and hateful exchanges.

Having just about narrowly escaped one of those is this thread (:nervous:), I go back to wishing you all a peaceful and joyful and blessed Ramadan. :statisfie
May Allah use you powerfully to show the beauty and humility of Islam to the rest of the world.
