A man served God for seventy years and then committed a sin which canceled the merit of his service.

Afterwards he gave a loaf of bread to a poor man, so God pardoned his sin and gave him back the merit of his seventy years' service.

His alms are vain who does not know that his need of the reward for giving is greater than the poor man's need of the gift.

فإنني جاهل بسيط وصاحبي جاهل مركب.

أي: يقول: أنا جاهل وأعلم أني جاهل لكن صاحبي جاهل ولا يدري أنه جاهل.

فأما الأول قال: فهو عالم فاسألوه،.

وأما الرابع: فهو الطامة الكبرى والمصيبة الدهياء: وهو الذي لا يدري ولا يدري أنه لا يدري، وهو الجاهل المركب، يقال له: أنت جاهل، قال: أنا جاهل؟! بل أنا عالم من العلماء

Khalil Ibn Ahmad said, People are four types: A man who is knowledgeable and aware of his knowledge, the second is knowledgeable but is unaware of his knowledge, the third, is not knowledgeable and is aware of his lack of knowledge, and the fourth has no knowledge and isn't aware that he has no Knowledge.​
Of the first Man, he's a scholar so consult him!​
The second is incognizant so make him aware!

The Third man is ignorant so teach him!​
The fourth is the greatest calamity, for there's nothing that can be done for him except to avoid him for when he's told you're of the ignorant, he says but I am a scholar.​
