Is this hadith talking about the sun orbiting the earth?
Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 54, Number 421
Narrated Abu Dhar:
The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing." (Q. 6: 38)
I have the following specific questions about this that are really bothering me.
1) Why does it say that the sun goes ANYWHERE at night when we know that the sun goes nowhere at night?
2) What part of the earth sees the sun when it is prostrating? In other words, if the sun disappears from the middle east at night and goes somewhere to prostrate, is it prostrating when the American continent can see it?
3) If it gains permission to rise again, then doesn't this mean that the sun moves, then stops to prostrate and waits for permission to rise and then starts moving again when it gets permission? How can we say that the sun stops and starts?
4) why does it tell us that one day the sun will move in the opposite direction around the earth and return to where it came from?
5) I think that maybe this is just Muhammad's knowledge or understanding as the Quran could never make a misunderstanding such as this. However, why is there also a prophecy in this hadith? Can Muhammad offer a prophecy that is inaccurate or untrue?
I try to be very honest with myself and am always seeking the truth no matter what the consequences are. This is a very unsettling hadith and is shaking my deen heavily. Any good answers would truly be appreciated.
