I wanted to ask if it is a bad thing or even shirk, say to change a negative behaviour or practice, but not for Islam or religion?

Walikumasalam. It wont be shirk but wont get blessings. For whom you did in the judgment day allah will sent you to him to get the pay what you did for him.

If you change behaviour because islam said. So wil get pay and blessing from allah and whoever interact with you like for him you want to change behaviour. Thus to benfits blessing and acceptence from allah and in high virtues in people eyes
