College Bars Muslim Student For Wearing Veil

A Muslim student says she is "emotionally traumatised" after her local college prevented her from enrolling because she wore a veil.

Shawana Bilqes, 18, claims the decision by Burnley College has left her humiliated and has disrupted her studies.

Shawana told Sky News: "I was willing to take it off as a compromise for identification checks, security or whatever. But they said I couldn't wear it anywhere on the premises."

In a statement, college Principal John Smith insisted that unimpeded communication with students was impossible if the face was not fully visible.

"All members of the college community should be identifiable at all times when in the college," he said.

Shawana insists it is her own choice and right to wear the veil. She has been training as a cadet with Lancashire Police and says it has never been a problem to remove the veil in the classroom but wear it outside as long as it is practical.

Her 21-year-old sister Nadia, who also wears the veil and studies at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston told Sky News: "It's totally absurd to think it is glued to our face, the college can't hide behind the security excuse."

"We are law abiding British citizens. If someone asks us to remove it for identification purposes we will."

"Those politicians like Jack Straw who've discussed the veil have gone about it the wrong way - it's given everyone leeway to discriminate but that means it's seen as OK to attack anyone who wears the veil, which is a totally unacceptable situation."

Shawana is now trying to pursue her education elsewhere and hopes the setback will not prevent her from embarking on a medical career.

If she's the only person wearing it at the college, then she is identifiable by her veil.

its not compulsory that we wear the niqaab in front of women so lets get that fact straight anyways. i can honestly understand why people would have a problem not being able to look at the face of the person because its seen as ignorance, if a female employer is interviewing a woman in niqaab it would be highly ignorant of the sister not to remove her niqaab so she can give the employer eye contact or with meeting with a female college director or what ever i can totally understand why people have a problem so id wear a hijab myself but if the women want to wear niqaab at the college then Mashallaah they should do it though its not compulsory but mashaLLAH they are very brave

^ There is difference of opinions when it comes to the Niqaab ... so to you it may not seem compulsary but the sister may feel it is ... regardless it is her choice

This sucks!! islamaphobia is going to be a huge problem in the west in the coming years :( May The ALmighty allow us to remain steadfast on the Deen and make it easier for us all who are struggling to maintain our Deen.

Just for the sake of clarification, there is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars over whether the Niqab is compulsory. Some feel there is greater evidence to support the view that it is compulsory and others reason that it is only Mustahab (recommended, but not obligatory). All scholars agree that it is permissible at least.

And if you follow the opinion that is it not obligatory, based on the reasoned opinion of a trustworthy scholar then alhamdulillah.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to wear the Niqab or Hijab in a hospital, Sister? I've never heard anything about this from any of the 'Ulema.

i dont know thats what im asking if anybody works in a hospital on the forum maybe could shed some light on what i was told

With a full mask like that I say this goes beyond mere anti-islamic sentiment. People simply don't trust people wearing masks. Its a deeply ingrained thing. I will bet you they wouldn't let me walk around campus in the summer wearing a ski mask either.

Couple that with the image Islam has garnered (unfair or not) for terrorism and it is rather predictable that her walking around in that is going to alarm some people and cause all kinds of administrative headaches. I can not fault the school for this decision. She could at least make her face visible and keep the rest of her covered so she is identifiable.

And no, her being the only one in the school wearing it doesn't make her identifiable. It gives cover for anybody else to pose as her. We see a black robe walking around we can't be sure its her.

Why black by the way? That just plays further into the psyche to alarm folks.

It's not a mask genius. It's a veil. I know girls who wear the veil at my college. No one makes a big deal of it.

In Indonesia is very easy to find women who wear hijab in college/UNI, in offices, on street, and in everywhere. But they wear hijab/jilbab, not full veil.

Full veil worn only by certain women, but I am doubt if I can find them in a college. That full veil worn only by married women and usually their husbands forbade them have any activity out of the house.

Although Indonesia has the largest number of Muslims, full veil like this is uncommon Muslimah dress in Indonesia.

That is sad.
Dear, Titus. :)

I understand if you have opinion that is sad. But actually I didn't talk about Muslim women in another place. I talked only about Muslim women in Indonesia.

There are some women in Indonesia who wear veil after they married and they have no activity out of the house because their husbands forbade them.
However, they are not sad because they have knew they should wear veil and probably their husbands would ban them working or go anywhere after they marry their husband.
And if they decided to marry their husbands, that because they agree to accept this condition. Muslim women have a right to refuse a marriage proposal.

My sister friend refused a marriage proposal because she didn't want to wear veil. A woman who wear veil refused my uncle marriage proposal. Also, I have a friend in high school, she is academy graduates but she decided to accept marriage proposal from an Islamic teacher, then she wears veil and became a housewife.
