The Islamic Ruling on Music and Singing - Abu Bilaal Mustafa al-Kanadi

Paperback: 86 Pages - Published: 2nd Edition, 1998 - purchase at troid.org

A compilation of resources analyzing the permissibility/impermissibility of Music and Singing. An often contested issue in modern times, contrastingly it has no Islamic roots despite much ado nowadays. Brother Mustafa al-Kanadi mentions the proofs that are brought for/against, the statements of the Companions and the noble salaf who proceeded them lest there be any doubt.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Islam...

Mustafa Al-Kanadi's excellent book on music and signing in Islam is a must read for Muslims. This "book" is online on at least half a dozen different web sites. However, all of these online versions are from a single, EDITED version of Brother Al-Kanadi's original work. This version has many, many typographical errors, some added text (without it being apparent as such) and is without a few important sections, such as the section "Exceptions to the Rule of Prohibition." In honor of Brother Al-Kanadi, I present to you, as best I can, the full, complete and unedited book as it was printed by his publishers, Abul-Qasim Bookstore, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of this book to add to your home library.

Here is a brief bio of the sheikh posted by sheikh Muhammad Jibaly on Kitaab_Sunnah Yahoo group:

Abu Bilal Mustafa al-Kanadi was born in Italy on July 4, 1950. At the age of four he emigrated with his family to the Lakes District of northern British Columbia where he spent his childhood and early teens. His family then moved in 1965 to Vancouver B.C. where he completed his secondary education.
In 1968 he embarked on the B.A. program at the University of British Columbia, and he graduated in 1972 from the Faculty of Arts with a major in English Literature. After a year's social work, he entered the Professional Development Program of the Education Faculty at Simon Fraser University. Having concentrated in the field of Special Education, he graduated with honors in the summer of 1974.

During his final semester at S.F.U., he embraced Islam. After living in the Muslim community of Vancouver for a year, he realized the need to further his Islamic education. With this objective in mind, he traveled to Makkah during Ramadaan of 1976 in order to perform hajj and to apply for admission to a program of Arabic and Islamic studies. He entered the Arabic Language Institute at Umm al-Qura University and completed the language program in two and a half years.

He then applied and was accepted to the College of Shariah and Islamic Studies where he undertook a concentration in the field of Quranic and Hadith Sciences. He graduated with honors in 1983.

In May 1989, he obtained a Master's Degree in Quranic Sciences from Umm al-Qura University. A few weeks later, he passed away at the age of 39, leaving behind five beautiful children. During his short life, he wrote a number of treatises on various Islamic topics and was actively engaged in writing, translating and dawah work.

How are we Obligated to Interpret the Noble Qur'aan? [PDF]

by Imaam Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee - Al-Ibaanah Book Publishing

This book is a complete translation of a treatise entitled “Kayfa Yajibu ‘alaynaa an Nufassir al-Qur’aan-al-Kareem” (How are we Obligated to Interpret the Noble Qur’aan). The source used for the translation was the Al-Maktabah al-Islaamiyyah first edition published in 1421H.

The foundation of this treatise is questions that were posed to the Shaikh, may Allaah have mercy on him, to which he responded in recorded format. These questions and answers were then transcribed, printed on paper and presented to the Shaikh who read them and commented on them in his own handwriting.

It is important to note also that in his biographical account of Imaam Al-Albaanee, Shaikh ‘Alee Al-Halabee counted this treatise as being one of his works.
