[emoji422] In a gathering where a talk or discussion is taking place, the person entering should not draw attention to himself by making salaam. He should not become an interference in the talk. He should lower his gaze and silently sit down. He should make salaam later when the opportunity arises.

Sayyidina Abu Huraira (RA) reported on the authority of the Prophet (SAW) that salaam should be offered by the rider to the pedestrian, the pedestrian to the one who is seated, and a fewer number to a larger group. And, Ibn Muthanna added in his hadith: And the young should salute the old. [Ahmed 10630, Bukhari 6231, Muslim 2160, Abu Dawud 5198]

Note : Here we can see great wisdom or hikmah as a rider can make an accident if he was forced to reply by a hand lift of a pedestrian by loosing his concentration of driving, riding and also the rider may overlook a pedestrian 's salam embarrassing creating hatred from the pedestrian and sin for the rider by missing a wajib ( by not replying to salam ) known from the Noble Quran verse below


''When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally. Certainly, Allah is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things.''

Sayyidina Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “By Him in Whose Hand is my life, you will not enter Paradise till you believe, and you will not believe till you love each other. Shall I not guide you to something which if you do, you will love each other. Give currency to salaam between yourselves.” [Muslim 54, Bukhari 260, Abu Dawud 5193, Ibn Majah 68, Ahmed 10436]

[emoji422] If a person conveys the salaam of another to you, you should reply ALAYHIM WA'ALAIKUMUS SALAAM. This is the best reply. However, if someone replies WA'ALAIKUMUS SALAAM, it will also suffice.

as far as I'm aware you still initiate it

but as far as I've seen hanafis stand at the door before entering a halaqa to ask permission to enter - but I was like :/ surely this disrupts it more

[emoji422] Better repayment for a favour will be when the repayment is greater than the act of favour rendered. Thus, the reply should be more than the Salaam (greeting).

Hence, If *السلام عليكم* was said the better reply will be
*وعليكم السلام و رحمة الله*.

If *وبركاته* is added it will be an _added_ merit.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.

Alhumdulillah, with the mercy and help of Allah, many *Etiquettes of Salaam* have been posted.

The greeting of Salaam is a very great bounty of Allah on us. *Unlike* other religions, the greeting of Salaam is a prayer to Allah i.e we are asking Allah to give *peace* to the person we just greeted. Salaam ends many years of enmity. Salaam removes pride, hatred, jealousy and many other spiritual sicknesses from the heart. Salaam creates love between people. Thats why Islam has emphasised a lot on Salaam. Nabi ﷺ has said: Make salaam to the person that you know and that person that you dont know.

But we will only gain the benefits of Salaam by following the proper Etiquettes. I make duaa that Allah grant us all the ability to practice on all the etiquettes posted on the thread.
