Few are those who are guided to the path that truly leads to happiness. Regarding that and other paths, here are three points for you to reflect upon:

1-Whoever does not make the pleasure of Allah to be his main concern in life will end up losing in the end (we shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not ). (Qura'an 7:182)

2-In order to achieve happiness, people attempt to follow many complicated and tricky paths.Little do they know that an easier path is read for them in the religion of islam - a path that will bring them the best of this life and the Hereafter. (..but if they had done what they were told,it would have been better for them , and would have strengthened their faith ). (Qura'an 4:66)

3-There are too many people in this world who think they are doing well, but who in reality , are losing out on the true religion.(And the word of your lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice ) . (Qura'an 6:115)

Yes, Alhumduallah but this is a tricky situation you quoted and I beg to differ here. There is actually a very thin line here between people thinking they are going right and are being guided and those who are actually being guided.
How would a layman know if someone is and is not?

The criteria is very simple. Note carefully the person who claims to be on the right path will be quoting quranic ayats and authentic hadith of Rasul Allah s.a.w. in his defence. You may not find any anomaly in his stance and also you will find in him/her a stability of purpose and character. What he/she says they always fulfil. No contradiction in words and deeds.
On the other hand, those who think they are properly guided but are not are those in whom you will find vast differences in what they preach and practice.

Actually, Allah is the better knower of who is and not on the right path :Koran: Surah Al-Anaam aya # 117 " Surely your Lord, He know best who goes stray from His path, and He knows those who follow the right path"

Allah Always knows best
