Efforts are under way to resolve confusion over whether the final round of Afghanistan's presidential election will go ahead next Saturday.

The planned run-off poll was thrown into doubt after opposition leader Abdullah Abdullah withdrew.

The only remaining candidate, incumbent President Hamid Karzai, has said the Afghan Independent Election Commission should decide the issue.

This is indeed unfortunate. The Afghan people deserve better. Now all we can do is hope that some sort of unity government between Karzai and Abdullah is formed. Without a cohesive government, how can the Taliban ever hope to be defeated?

Indeed reading reports that karzai govt has failed to win people's love has scared me.What we need is a govt there which people can keep their faith on.Infighting would benefit taliban more.Hope this is resolved soon

The second round of elections has now been called off.

Unsurprising, seeing as Karzai was the only candidate.

this is good news for the US. now, Karzai's brothers position will be strengthened. with the help of the US forces, the Taliban will be relegated to the mountains and caves and opium production should boom!

as a result of having all that money back in the economy via the CIA, the recession should be over soon!

did you notice the Taliban resurgence and the economic collapse were simultaneous?

the US can't function without the "drug money."
