I feel that this is a very important read most especially in this section because there are non-muslims that do come here to learn. We as muslims want to establish a good impression and in order to do that we should read the steps of how to greet a non-muslim. In this aspect if we are going to do it, we must atleast do it right. Inside the passage there are some narratives of how the prophet(saw) has demonstrated so it will give you a better idea of how we should greet a non-muslim person.

To greet Non-muslims:

1) To start with, our Prophet (peace be upon him) never said we could not initiate greetings with non-Muslims. He said: “Do not initiate the salutation of ‘salâm’ with the People of the Book." [Sahîh Muslim].

2)The People of the Book are the Christian and Jews, but this hadîth applies to all non-Muslims. This hadîth forbids us from saluting non-Muslims with the particular greeting of “salâm” before they greet us with it, but it certainly does not forbid us from using other types of salutations such as “Hello”, “Hi”, “Good morning”, “Good evening”, “How are you” and the like. Therefore, it is perfectly alright for a Muslim who works with non-Muslims or resides in their countries to initiate these kinds of salutation with them.

3)Moreover, it is worth poining out that some scholars have permitted initiating the greeting of “salâm” with non-Muslims in special cases. Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Some scholars allowed us to greet the unbelievers with this salutation for some reasons; such as being in need of them, in fear them, or simply on account of having a good relationship with one of them or any other good reason.” [Zâd al-Ma`âd (2/425)]

And Allah knows best.

Greetings and peace Halima,

I have found the people on your forum to be very welcoming and friendly

In the spirit of seeking greater interfaith relations

Eric

Greetings Eric,

Why thank you . I am very much pleased to hear that you are very fond of the people on this forum. Nothing is better than learning/respecting other religions even if it wasn't our own. You are the guests here therefore we as muslims have to keep a good conduct to establish a great impression. Moreover, we like to teach non-muslims about Islam so that they wouldn't feel left out. At the same token in time, we are promoting Islam which is the main purpose of this forum.

Allah says: “Allah, with respect to those who do not fight you or drive you from your homes, does not forbid you to treat them kindly or justly, for truly Allah loves those who are just.” [Sûrah al-Mumtahanah: 8]

Salam Sister.

Indeed you are most certainly right. I can't agree with you even more. I can assure you that if we treat non-muslims like our guests they will surely appreciate everything. They deserve the same respect as we do. It doesn't even matter if its in an Islamic forum. They deserve the same repsect that we do. Once they get that respect nothing will go wrong.
