one word of advice you said you're reading 'Tarif Khalidi's' translation of quran, I've never heard of it but usually we recommend people read the more well known translations such as by marmaduke pickthall, yusuf ali and muhsin khan

No, I'm considering taking my graduate degree there, but I'm attending SFU right now. The course was under Dr. Darryl Maclean. I think he worked at McGill back when they established their Islamic studies.

Thank you Aadil! I don't mind Pickthall's translation. In fact, it reminds me of the old English I'm used to as a history major. I was very cautious of Yusuf Ali because I read that the latest revision of his commentary on the Qur'an purposely downplayed the roles of Hassan and Husayn. I took Khalidi's translation simply because the bookstore I went to had a very limited selection, and I know it's received some praise. But I have ordered a free translation of the Qur'an from http://www.freequran.ca/, and I'm sure they'll be sending one of the more standard copies you recommended (probably Yusuf Ali's).

Wait a second Tv wasnt that invented by an Philo Taylor Farnsworth (American), the Radio was by Guglielmo Marconi (Italian) , the Medical Vaccine was by Edward Jenner (British) and the Zipper by Whitcomb L. Judson (American).

You're thinking of simple, telegraph radio (beep beep, beep messages). It was recently discovered Marconi actually stole Nikola tesla's ideas.

The process of vaccination was actually first used in ancient China and Iran. Jenner was the first person to extract and "inject" infected pus in a person. Canada universalized the vaccine. My bad. : )

Judson came up with the idea of a zipper. Gideon Sundback (Canadian) realized his idea would never work the way it was and designed the zipper you and I know today.

I'm a history major.. I know these things. :D

I almost was a history major, but I went to a school where a distant relative of mine was a famous historian, so there was too much pressure to succeed +o( I did political science and religious studies instead, which I'd venture to guess is equally as useless as a history major outside of college ;D

I'll do my obligatory reference to my helpful links for newbies - http://umms.wordpress.com/converts/ - I actually drew it up with converts in mind, but it does have a lot of good resources for those interested in learning more about islam as well :)

re: quran translation, I have a ton that I love. It's actually my goal to collect every english translation ever done. For simple ease of reading, I like the Bewley translation. For quran + commentary, I like Ali Unal and Muhammad Asad.

Hey, thank you! That would be a bit intimidating! The way I see it, with a history/poli-sci degree you can be a professor, librarian or diplomat. But it's still tons of fun to study. :shade:

Thanks for the recommendations--I've been wondering where to find an English translation with commentary. Right now I'm going back and forth between Qur'an and laptop, and it's a big hassle. I'm going to bookmark that site btw. It looks full of good stuff.

Not to mention that insulin was discovered in Canada
