Help me understand jihad

Jihad is two fold. Inner Jihad (greater Jihad) and outer jihad.
Inner Jihad is where one struggles with one self and strives to be a better person, muslim, human, etc. It is a battle within to improve oneself and fighting against the ills of one self, society or the whispering of the satan.
Outer Jihad is the physical Jihad for which permission has been given on order for one to defend themselves, their property, land, honor, etc. If anyone violates or try to violate your women, you have right to defend them. If anyone tries to take your land, kill you, or your kin, you have right to defend it all. If anyone invades your country, occupies it, do as they please, you have the right to fight back.

Jihad literally means to struggle. In that sense, even non-Muslims do Jihad. A non-Muslim doctor studying for his/her MBBS is doing Jihad. At the time of prophet Muhammad, the pagans of Makkah struggled to make Islam weak. But the Jihad done by Muslims is called JihadfiSabillallah (Jihad in the way of Allah). I completely agree with Islamirama's explanation here. I would also like to add that here the condition of Jihad with the sword as given by the Quran
Allah forbids you not with regard to those who fight you not for your faith, nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them. For Allah loves those who are just. Allah only forbids you with regard to those who fight you for your faith, and drive you out of your homes and support others in driving you out, from turning to them for protection (or taking them as wali). Those who seek their protection they are indeed wrong- doers.] (Al-Mumtahinah 60: 8-9
So as long as a non-Muslim does not kick me out of my home or fight me because I am a Muslim, I have to be kind. But a Muslim should do Jihad (in this case, fight) against those who kick him out of his home or fight him because he is a Muslim

Because the media, especially the western media says Jihad means Holy war. Which leads to people being blinded and assuming it is allowed in Islam to kill non-Muslims for no reason. Basically they have misinterpreted the true meaning, so please try not to fall for such misleading conclusions led by the Media

can you believe my best friend once asked me that question, I have known her forever... I guess she banked on that I assumed she knew or that I would be offended by her question.. it was hilarious.. how many people out there, genuinely don't know what the word Jihad means...

then i remember that Hadith that said whan a person if ignorance approaches you,respond in a nice wy...or something along those lines
