I wouldn't recommend this book, because it has lots of errors as Sheikh al Muhadith Muqbil bin Haadi Al Waadi'ii indicated, however as an Alternative The best book is by Imaam Ahmad ibn Hajar Al 'Asqalaani, called " Al Isaabah fii tamyeezis Sahaabah " it is a long book and it is a good one, also Siyar A'laamu nubalaa by Imaam Adh Dhahabii.

i dont know what your shiekh has indicated. can you share with me what type of error this book has.
this book is not the book of fiqha. it is only book throwing light on the life of shaba r.a the Companion of Prophets s.a.w with proper source references, from the hadith books .
This book written first time in the history in this amazing style, focusing more on the sahaba struggles and sacrifices for deen. if you will read you will imagine its legency.

The book Hayatus Sahabah is an excellent encyclopedia on the lives of the Sahabah. It was originally written in Arabic and later translated into Urdu, English and other languages. Please check the original Arabic copy with Sharh and footnotes from the links below. As you can see, everything is properly referenced and deeply researched.

Like I said, this book is not to be depended on as Sheikh Al Albaani said. Al-Isaabah fii Tamyeezis Sahaabah is very good because it was written by a great Muhadith Ibn Hajar Al 'Asqalaani, likewise Imaam Adh Dhahabi's Siyar.
سئل الشيخ العلامة محدث العصر بلا منازع / محمد ناصر الدين الألباني رحمه الله رحمة واسعة عن كتاب ( حياة الصحابة ) الكاندهلوي في شريط له بعنوان ( نقد كتاب حياة الصحابة لجماعة التبليغ ) من سلسة الهدى والنور برقم (524 /1) فقال :
" .... كتاب الصحابة هو دليل لما نقول نحن ، الذي ألف هذا الكتاب ليس فرداً من أفراد جماعة التبليغ ، بل هو رأس إن لم يكن من رؤوسهم فهو رأس الرؤوس ، ألف هذا الكتاب والجماعة ينطلقون على هداه ، ولكن هذا الكتاب جمع ماهب ودب ، أي لم يخصص هذا الكتاب بأن يذكر فيه ماصح أولاً عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لأن كلام الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ليس ككلام غيره من الناس ولو كانوا أولياء وصالحين ، ثانياً ذكر روايات كثيرة عن الصحابة رضي الله عنهم فيها أيضاً من باب أولى ؛ إذا كان في الأحاديث التي نسبها للرسول فيها أشياء لا تصح نسبتها إلى الرسول عند من ؟ عند أهل العلم بطريق معرفة الحديث ومعرفة الأسانيد وتراجم رجال الأسانيد ونحو ذلك ، فمن باب أولى أن يذكر في هذا الكتاب روايات كثيرة وكثيرة جداً عن الصحابة من أقوالهم ، من أفعالهم ، من منهجهم ، من سلوكهم وكثير منها لا يصح ، ويعجبني في هذه المناسبة قول لشيخ الإسلام بن تيمية رحمه الله وهذا من نفيس كلامه ، ودقيق منهجه العلمي ، حيث قال ما معناه ( أن على كل باحث أن يتثبت في كل ما يرويه عن أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كما يتثبت فيما يرويه عن الله ورسوله ) ........ إلى أن قال : هذا الكتاب كتاب الصحابة خالف هذا النهج العلمي فهو جمع ما هب ودب ........ إلى أن قال : أنه لا ينبغي الاعتماد عليه ( أي الكتاب ) إلا بشيء من التحفظ .... " إلى أخر كلامه .
ثانياً : قال الشيخ العلامة مدفع أهل السنة الشيخ / حمود بن عبد الله التويجري رحمه الله في كتابه القيم ( القول البليغ في التحذير من جماعة التبليغ ) ما نصه :
" وللتبليغيين كتاب أخر يعتمدون عليه ويجعلونه من مراجع أتباعهم من الأعاجم من الهنود وغيرهم ، وهو المسمى ( حياة الصحابة ) لمحمد يوسف الكاندهلوي ، وهو مملوء بالخرافات والقصص المكذوبة والأحاديث الموضوعة والضعيفة ، وهو من كتب الشر والضلال والفتنة." أنتهى كلامه رحمه الله .
وصلى الله على نبينا محمد ،،،،،،،،،
و قال الشيخ المحدث مقبل بن هادي الوادعي رحمه الله " فلا يعتمد عليه " أي هذا الكتاب حياة الصحابة

Bro Ali_slave of Allah, many a times it happens that, a person asks a big famous scholar about a particular group/issue/book etc about which the Shaikh himself had no opportunity to learn about, and to conduct a thorough unbiased study about it, due his busy schedule and endeavours. So the shaikh asks his students and associates about it, and sometimes, due to their differences in manhaj etc, they advice the shaikh against the issue/book etc. This leads to a biased judgment and the result is, people are prevented from Khair.
The fatwa you quoted above seems of the same nature. Instead of explaining the actual issues with the book, it starts with discrediting the author and then goes on to say that the book contains many false and fabricated stories. This is akin to saying that the author made up these stories to misguide the people.
On the contrary, if you just download one part of the book from the links I have given above and check it for yourself, you can see for yourself how well researched this book is.
