A person may pray every day and still remain distant if the heart is absent; another may pray only two Raka'at with complete sincerity; and the Heavens may open before him. The Sufis often spoke about khudur, the state of inner presence before Allah. Outwardly 2 people may appear identical in worship - both stand; both recite; both bow; but inwardly one is wandering through markets, memories and anxieties, while the other is standing before the Lord of the worlds with a trembling soul. One prayer rises only to the ceiling; another ascends beyond the stars. Allah Ta'ala says in the Holy Qur'an: -
"Successful indeed are the believers; those who are humble in their prayer'' (Mu'minun -23:1-2)
Notice that the verse did not merely praise those who pray, it praises those who are fully present in prayer. Humility here is not weakness; it is awareness; it is the collapse of pride before Divine Majesty. It is realizing that every breath you possess was given to you by the One you now stand before. Many people live as if death belongs to others; yet the wise live differently. The wise understand that death is not a tragedy waiting at the end of life, it is a companion walking beside every moment.
The Sufis never remembered death to become hopeless, they remembered it so they could awaken...... because when you know something may be your last moment, falseness disappears; you stop pretending; you stop speaking empty words; you stop worshipping lazily; you stop treating hearts carelessly. Aman once asked one of the righteous: 'how can I soften my heart?' The reply was simple-- 'pray the prayer of farewell.' This is exactly what Sheikh Ibn Arabi, may Allah sanctify his secret, points to in his teachings -- pray as though this is the final meeting between you and this world, because one day it truly will be.
Think about it, if tonight were your final night on earth, how would you stand in prayer? Would you rush, would you scroll through distractions moments before facing Allah? Would your heart remain cold or would tears gather in your eyes from realizing how many chances were wasted? The ego always whispers tomorrow; but the soul knows only now....... Hmm tomorrow? Note that tomorrow is one of the greatest illusions ever given to humanity. Countless people planned repentance for a future they never reached; countless people intended to become sincere later; later became never. The Holy Qur'an reminds us: --
''And no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow; and no soul knows in what land it will die.''
