Ignorance

Assalamualaikum

If a person had stolen from someone and for some reason didn’t know that stealing was haraam, would they still have to reimburse the owner or whatever it was? Because I read somewhere that if you do something that’s against someone’s right but your are ignorant you still have to apologise/reimburse them.

Return the same or anything at par value or ask him to forgive you if unable to return
