Has any amount of Islamic legal scholarly work been done on the issue of inheritance tax? What is your personal opinion on the issue?

In South Africa, we have a choice on whether to appoint the master of the court to distribute or it can be done personally.

Many people opt to distribute personally as the inheritance tax is exorbitant.
