fish and chips instead of salad would possibly be more harmful - yet it's perfectly allowed.

The difference is that sensible amounts of fish and chips nourish you. Sensible amounts of cigarettes do not; their effects are negative at any amount.

yeah the bad is more than the good - is what i was thinking on my way out, amazingly - i came across this totally unrelated video while watching japanese people eat wriggling squids, i don't know how i got to the smoker's lungs video - but i did - and now i'm thinking...............................

scroll to 2 min 45 seconds

so then i checked this:

I think that smoking is a makrouh act , close to haram, almost haram ,why? I'm am not a scholar but in this case, you don't have to be one.

There is a hadith that " all substances containing addictions (Nasha) are haram" And Nicotine in tobbacco is undoubtedly a highly addictive substance which has no other purpose than to destroy your health, spread all that destructive smoke to people around you and let your dentist smell the bad breath from your mouth for so long :/ .

It also paves way for other addictive euphoric substances, since the same among of nicotine stops giving you the high that it gives initially and thus the dose increases per our body demands, and on comes the dope and then hashish and then dying in your sleep without even knowing it : p

So, going by that standard, I don't consume coffee and tea on a regular basis, cause they also cause addiction and dependency, but since their effect on health is not destructive and they just cause dependency, they are not considered haram. I take them once a while for fun, but not regular cause the thought of being addicted to something scares me, and also weakens your will power, yellows your teeth, dehydrates your system, and yeah hate to wash coffee tea utensils :p:

A better alternative to smoking and tea/coffee is green herbal tea, which not only has innumerable health benefits, but also freshens you up,wakes you up,really good for digestion, hydration and easy to make, clean up after, without the addiction hang overs and stuff. But if you're on on coffee or tea, you're dependent on it like a slave : p If you don't have herbal tea, just try drinking hot water like the chinese, and have amazing health, fitness and no need for tea/coffee; hot water also wakes your brain up real good.

smoking seriously i dont know whether its harram but its bad for you the only difference between smoking and shooting yourself in the head is one is a fast death the other takes years

and you shouldnt need to be told its harram to keep away from it allah has given us the brains to think for ourself

Another thing it does is weaken will power and the ability to cope with stress naturally.
It's like a hiding place from reality with smoke and coals at the bottom

And the following Hadith did not make me feel good about smoking either:

On the authority of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (radiAllahu anhu), the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said:

"The likeness of a righteous friend and an evil friend,
is the likeness of a (musk) perfume seller and a blacksmith.
As for the perfume seller, he may either bestow something on you,
or you may purchase something from him,
or you may benefit from his sweet smell.
And as for the blacksmith, he may either burn your clothes,
or you may be exposed to his awful smell."
[Bukhari and Muslim]

I don't know if its haram or not, but it sure is disgusting... i can't stand being around someone who smokes. :heated:

i'm begging and pleading Allah (swt) to help me on this. I didnt start smoking till about 7-8 years ago ( i'm 34) anyone wants to know why i started at such an age, Ill be glad to go into it. I don't smoke the 3 packs a day by any means that my dad did ... but I do KNOW i have to quit. For myself, to please Allah (swt) ... because my mother and step father are quitting.. take your pick on the reason or reasons.

I work in a highly stressful call center and i'm really worried about work because my breaks are so needed to calm down and regroup before the next two hours or so of calls.... but i think i actually want to quit. I don't know which part of the whole smoking thing is the most addicting. but i do know i need to quit and i know w/ Allah's (swt) help I can. However, if anyone is so inclined to say Du'a for me while i try this.. Please Please feel free.

You can still take those breaks but have some fresh air/cup of tea/glass of water/chat instead. I used to do this in a previous role when a friend of mine smoked.

When I get stressed, I slash my face with cold water. Then I take a deep breath and drink some water...find something to laugh about too.

Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people. Allah (SWT) says:

Do not kill yourselves, Allah is indeed merciful to you. (An-Nisa' 4-29)

Do not cast yourselves, with your own hands, into destruction. (Al-Baqarah 2:195)

And the Messenger(SAW) says:No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others.(Recorded by Ahmad and Ibn Maajah from Ibn `Abbaas and `Ubaadah; authenticated by al-Albaani and others.)

The feet of a human being will not depart, on the day of Judgement, from his standing before his Lord, until he is questioned about five things: his lifetime - how did he pass it, his youth - how did he used it, his wealth - where did he earn it and how did he spend it, and how did he follow what he knew. (Recorded by at-Tirmithi and others from Ibn Mas`ud and AbO Barzah , authenticated by al-Albaani.)

Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.( Al-Bukhaari and Muslim from Jaabir)

A lot of people gave answers with proof from the Quran, even tho its not a direct yes or no. but that answer is SUFFICIENT. What I dont understand is why there is even slight confusion about this topic...

We know suicide is haram, harming ourselves is haram. Ask yourself, is there anything good about smoking? Does it increase your health in a good way...of course not. Its not HARD...:/ We all know what the lungs of a smoking person looks like. As someone else mentioned...surely you wouldnt smoke cocaine, weed, pot, LSD..etc...so what makes smoking (cigarettes) any different? =/

You pretty much deteriorate your organs....and Im sure we all understand, Allaah would hate such an act. we hate what Allah hates. Also...i remember like last year...they said it may also cause blindness...yea so stay away.

this whole argument is why i'm trying to quit. I could have posted my intentions to another thread as I was going to try and quit before reading this one... but at the same time this one seemed appropriate.
quiting for some people... is easier than others... for some people... they can quit cold turkey and never think about it again.. .a friend of mine did that. I am not so able to do that.. wish i were.. and i'm hoping Allah ( swt ) will guide me as i quit.
