As-Salaam alaikum,
Sometimes a person reaches a point where there is no strength left to speak, no energy left to do anything; Du'a grows silent; plans fall apart; what you call hope slips from your hands like smoke; and at that moment a voice inside you says let go; leave everything to Allah. But how, is it that easy?
When your heart is in turmoil, when your mind is filled with many questions, how do you let go? This is exactly where the words of Sheikh Ibn Arabi, may Allah sanctify his secret, reach your heart and touch it. He says that Tawheed is higher than Tawakkul, because the one who relies still expects something; but the one who practices Tawheed simply surrenders. With Ibn Arabi, when a person practices Tawakkul he still searches for a share for himself in his heart, but the one who practices Tauheed leaves his share and his claim entirely to Allah.
What we usually understand by Twakkul is this: I do what I can, and then I leave the rest to Allah; but the Sheikh would gently smile at this because he would say, you are still saying: 'I did what I could.' You still think there is power within yourself. Tawheed is a different station, it is not just leaving the matter to Allah, it is leaving yourself to Allah; it is no longer leaning on your own strength but relying only on His power because nothing a person does with his own hands has an outcome by itself. There is only the will of Allah; and when a person realizes this, his heart feels as if it has been freed from its chains.
Many people rely on Allah, yet deep inside they are still afraid: what if it doesn't happen; what if destiny is against me? But the one who reaches the station of Tawheed no longer speaks this way because he knows Allah will never be against him. He only saves you from your own self, and this is why according to Ibn Arabi the one who practices Tawheed even feels different while making Du'a. The way he makes Du'a is not 'O Allah give me this'.... It becomes 'O Allah make me content with what You will.' And at that moment, a deep surrender is born in the heart. That surrender frees you from every kind of fear, because once you reach that state nothing that leaves you truly breaks you anymore. You have already let go of yourself... In other words, the one who surrenders does not only surrender to Allah, but also to His Decree because destiny is Allah's Hidden Mercy. Such surrender not only gives a person peace, it makes him strong in life because nothing can shake him anymore; he no longer lives in a state of Tawakkul alone, but in the secret of Tawheed, which returns the servant's will back to the will of Allah. So, in truth when you let something go, you are not losing it, you are simply returning it to its true owner.
