Malaysian Catholics to fast for peace in Middle East

KUALA LUMPUR: In an attempt to convert the minds and hearts of the political leaders involved in Middle East crisis, the Catholic Church in Malaysia will heed Pope Benedict XVI's call for Catholics around the world to fast and pray towards a humanitarian effort for justice and peace.

Datuk Murphy Pakiam, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, announced Aug 14 as a day of fast and prayer in conjunction with St Maxmilian Kolbe's fast day, and Aug 15 as the feast of Assumption where collections will be made during Masses for innocent victims of the conflict and sent to the Pope's office for distribution.

The Catholic Church also agreed to the statement issued by the Catholic Bishop's conference of the United States on the proposition that the United States restrains Israel from further violence, a move also suggested by more than a dozen Roman Catholic and Protestant groups who presented US President George W Bush with a letter appealing to him to achieve immediate ceasefire.

I'm amazed that some people actually believe President Bush can snap his fingers and Israel will suddenly stop the offensive into southern Lebanon. The U.S. has alot of influence but not control over Israeli policy. This is their own national security matter, and it is in their hands to stop the offensive or not.

This means that people do look at GW Bush as somebody who has the strongest force to do so.... Who else? Putin?

Sure, Bush could get on television and ask the Israelis to end the offensive into Lebanon. Instead, he and his advisors believe that for peace to truly be achieved, Hezbollah must be weakened significantly and a buffer zone created, leaving Israeli towns safe from rocket and missile fire from Hezbollah. Bush and Olmert would also like to see U.N. Resolution 1559 actually implemented, which means Hezbollah would have to disarm and become a political party only. This is a war with an objective in mind, although the civilian deaths outweigh the goals, and rightly so.

How many UN resolutions against Israel made, which Bush or Olmert want to be implemented? :rollseyes
 
General Assembly resolutions usually amount U.N. "condemns Israel for their lack of cheese production"...which, besides my satire, means many nations that don't like Israel get together and pass a resolution in the general assembly. The major resolutions to do with aggression, weapons, etc, go to the UN security council. The General Assembly can condemn actions, but they don't pass resolutions you can "violate".

The link doesn't work, but I've seen this list that you have cited. You will notice the majority of them are "condems". The more forceful ones are centered around the occupation of Lebanon. Specifically Resolution 425, which called for the international peace-keeping force to return authority to the Lebanese government and to end the occupation. Of course the "international peace-keeping force" did absolutely nothing in terms of disarming Hezbollah or creating this so-called buffer zone mentioned in the resolution.

Malaysian leaders are talking to send troops to Lebanon under UNIFIL. But seeing the situation. What the heck can UNIFIL do?
