An online radio station run jointly by members of the Jewish and Muslim faiths is celebrating its first anniversary.

Radio Salaam Shalom was the idea of two Rabbis, an Imam and members of the Jewish and Muslim communities.

The aim of the Bristol-based station is to establish stronger links and understanding between the two groups.

The station, in the Easton area of the city, is internet-based, attracts listeners from all over the world and broadcast 24 hours a days.

The idea for the radio station came from a group meeting between young Muslim and Jewish students at Bristol University and the University of the West of England.

The groups were meeting to discuss the similarities between two major religious festivals which were happening at the same time - the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, and the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah.

The station was set up after receiving a £50,000 grant from government's Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund and has taken nine months to set up.

The group is made up of around 35 people, all volunteers from the age of 11 upwards. They all broadcast in English.

Good idea and probably long overdue. I wonder how large the listening audience is?

Greetings,

is there a way to listen this radio station on Internet? Shoutcast ?

This is a very good idea.

Peace

Excellent.

If I lived in Bristol, I'd listen to it and talk to them about starting a comedy item. The potential is limitless! :D
